William was in Liverpool, Nova Scotia for a time,living on Coffin Island. He joined his brothers, Isaac and Ephraim there. He came back to fight in the Rev. War for the state of Massachusetts as did his brother, Isaac. An Annable Island is name after the Annble brothers who lived there in Nova Scotia.

William married Pike Tabitha on 03 Jul 1760 in Rochester, Plymouth County, MA. Tabitha (daughter of Pike Leonard and Snow Anne) was born on 29 Jan 1737 in Truro, Barnstable County, MA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Isaac, a tailor, from Dartmouth, Bristol, County, MA was among the first to settle the town of Barrington, Nova Scotia about 1761. He was joined by Nathan Snow, a cousin. (VR/Barrington, NS) He had lot No. 49 in the town of Barrington, next to John Coffin who later became his father-in-law. This however, may have been his brother, Ephraim, who married Margaret Coffin.

Isaac was first married to Eunice Swain of Nantucket, Nantucket Co. MA. Their daughter Abigail, was born in Nantucket and a son, Ephraim, was been born in Barrington, Nova Scotia on 3 March 1765. After the death of Eunice, he married Margaret Coffin, daughter of John Coffin who was also originally from Nantucket. I am not convinced it wasn't Isaac's brother, Ephraim who married Margaret Coffin instead of Isaac.

Margaret died sometime before 1772. It is unknown if they had children together.

According to The History of Barrington Township, by Edwin Crowell, page 432/433, Isaac sold in 1785 to Richard Pinkham for 25 pounds his lot and dwelling house. His 2nd Division lot, No. 97 was laid out to him in 1784 but drawn by Richard Pinkham. As his name was not in the 1770 census, it is likely he had moved to Halifax by then. He is listed as having charged rum in Doane's Mog-book. His name also survives in Annable's Shoal, west of Blackberry Island.

Isaac is listed as living in Halifax when his marriage intention to widow, Lydia (Peckham) Delano was announced according to the vital records of Dartmouth, MA.(6 July 1772)

The below are records from Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution, 17 Vols. Vol. 1, p, 274:

Annabell, Isaac, Dartmouth, was a Sergeant , Capt. Luen Pope's Co., which marched April 21, 1775, in response to the alarm of April 19, 1775, to Roxbury; service; 5 days.

Isaac Annibal was a Private in Capt. Benjamin Alton's Co. Col. John Rand's Regt.; enlisted July 9, 1780; discharged Oct. 10, 1780; service , 3 mos. 11 days, at West Point; enlistmant, 3 months; also order for wages dated Oxford, April 2, 1782; money payable to Col. Jacob Davis.

Bristol County, MA land records (62-164) show that Isaac purchased land in Dartmouth 6 Jan 1781 and sold the same land 10 Apr 1793 and the transaction was recorded 12 Sept 1793 (72-171) when he moved to Saratoga, NY. Lydia signed the deed under Isaac's signature, which would indicate that she removed with him to New York. This land was in Dartmouth, which would later become part of New Bedford. Other property was sold in December of 1780. They were still there when the 1800 census was taken but by 1803, they were in Saratoga, NY. There is some confusion as to whether this is the correct Isaac, still living in New Bedford in 1800 as you will read below.

In the 1790 Federal Census for New Bedford, Bristol County, MA, it lists Isaac as head of the household with 2 males over 16, 2 males under 16 and 4 females. Probably Isaac,Sr. and Isaac, Jr. are over 16, John and Prince, under 16 and three daughters and his wife would be the females. Cornelius was probably born after the census was taken in 1790. Ephraim would have been gone from home at the age of 25 when the census was taken.

Isaac is listed in the Stillwater, Albany County, NY census for the year of 1799. He lived next door to Samuel Leggitt and Gabriel Leggett, then Ephraim Annable. Next door to Ephraim was Thomas Leggitt.

I saac had $26. in real extate and he was taxed $2.00. fro that year. Ephraim, perhaps his son, had $832. in real property and $135. in personal property. He was taxed $96. for the year.

Daughter, Eunice married Samuel Right Brown on February 13, 1803 in Saratoga.

A family history, "Home Folks Book of the Darius Myer's Family" by Violet M. Beck, 1968, a descendant of Prince Annable,states that Isaac, Sr. died at the age of 95 years.

In 1800, the New York census shows two Isaac Annables. One of them lived in Stillwater, Saratoga County, while the other lived in Cambridge, Washington County. The one in Saratoga could be this Isaac and his son in Washington County. Daughter, Eunice was married in Saratoga so this is more than likely correct.

Multiple births in this family first appear with the Snow/Smalley line of ancestors and have followed through for many generations.

Ephriam Annable, who lived in Saratoga, NY during the early 1800's and whose Rev. War records state that he was born in Nova Scotia in 1765 is probably the same as above. There are no vital records in Barrington, Nova Scotia for any Annables. According to the 1790 census in New Bedford, Massachusetts, no other previous children are listed that would fit the age group. Ephraim would have been seven years old at the time Isaac married Lydia. It is, however, according to family tradition, that an Ephraim was born to Isaac and was a half brother to Isaac's children by Lydia.

Audrey Annable Franklin says that Isaac died on 5 June, 1798 but location is unknown.

1: Isaac Annable, born 1738 in Mass. went to Nova Scotia in about 1759-60 with his cousins: Capt. Jabez and Joshua Snow. They remained in Nova Scotia and Isaac returned to NY state sometime after 1765 when Ephraim was born in Nova Scotia to him and his wife, Eunice Swain. He is my GGGGgrandfather through another wife.

Annible comes in again, Joshua Boomer is passenger with him & Thomas Burnsby. Perkins, Aug. 28, 1783: Capt. Annible sails again.
3: From same source as #2: ANNABLE, WILLIAM, francis Tupper says that Robert Plaiceway, Acue Trip, Wm. Annable, Jonathan Wood, Peleg Coffin and one Isaac Coffee, a negro, very early in settlement of Lpool established a fishery on
Coffin Island, with Peleg Coff as shoreman, and, apparently, the only one with house on Island. Long, Page 63: One of the deeds is from Robert Plaiceway, Acue Tripp, William ANnable, Isaac Cuffey (Coffee?), and Jonathan Wood, conveying to Daniel Torrey "a certain island at the entrance of the harbor know as Bear Island". This is now Coffin's Island.

Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress, Passed June 7, 1832

State of New York, County of Saratoga.

On this sixth day of September one thousand eight hundred thirtytwo personally appeared in open Court before the Judges of the Courtof Common Pleas of the County of Saratoga now sitting, Ephraim Annable a resident of the town of Stillwater in the county and state aforesaid, aged sixty seven years the third day of March last who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832.

That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated.

That in the year 1781 the United States and French troops having been called from Rhode Island to the southern States, several companies of State troops were raised by the State of Massachusetts where he then resided.

That he enlisted as a volunteer for six months starting in the month of June, 1781 for eight dollars per month, that he left the town of Dartmouth in the County of Bristol in the State of Massachusetts, marched to a place called Smiths Mills and joined a company commanded by Captain Gifford. This Company marched from there across Howland's Ferry to a fort on Butt's [?] Hill on the north end of Rhode Island. There were three companies there. The United States and French troops had all but left the fort a few days after he got there. Of the companies, one was commanded by Captain Discards [?], the other by Captain Elliot [?]. His Colonel was named Turner and the Major's name, Claggon. The Lieutenant to his company was named Bosworth [?], the Order Sargeant's name was Dean.(He does not recollect the names of any officers of the regular troops.) He staid (sic) at the fort during his term of service, engaged in guarding the fort and any little service about it. He received a regular discharge from Colonel Turner and returned home some time in the month of December, 1781.

While he was at the fort, news of Cornwallis's defeat was received and the regiment celebrated the occasion.

He has no documentary evidence [?] of his service. He knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his service.

To the interrogations propounded by this court the applicant made thefollowing answers:

1. He was born at Nova Scotia on the third day of March, 1765.
2. He has a record of his age in his family Bible at home which he took from his father's family Bible .
3. When he entered the service he resided in the town of Dartmouth (that part now called Fairhaven) in the county of Bristol in the State of Massachusetts, resided in that neighborhood and was on several voyages at sea till 1789. He then relocated to the town of Stillwater the County of Saratoga, State of New York where he has continued to reside ever since -- where he now resides.
4. He entered the service as a volunteer.
5. He recollects the names of no others except those above stated, neither can he state the general circumstances of his service any more fully than above set forth.
6. He received a regular descharge from Colonel Turner. He took it home with him and it was put with his father's papers since which time he has never seen it.
7. Thomas Hunt, David Benedict, Judge Geo. Palmer, Rev. Elnathan Finch, John Wilson, Charles Neilson.
He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or anuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension role of the agency of any State.

Who is the Isaac Annable/ Anible who is listed in New Bedford, Bristol County, MA in the 1800 census and is 16-25 years of age if not this Isaac?

Isaac married Beecher Polly in 1794. Polly was born about 1774. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

It is a possibility that this Cornelius, son of Isaac and Lydia, is the one who lived in Howard, Steuben County, NY instead of Cornelius, son of Cornelius, born in CT. Because the Cornelius in Howard had children by the names of Caleb and Lydia,(uncle and mother's names) leads me to believe this is this correct person who lived in Howard, NY. Need to be checked further.

He was taken prisoner in the War of 1812. (Home Folks Book of Darius Myer's Family)

In the 1830 census, Cornelius was living in Cameron, Steuben county next door to Charles Brown, the son of Eunice M.Brown, Cornelius's sister. Although it doesn't show that Eunice is with her family, the rest of the family fits in the profile. Eunice may have been off taking care of her elderly widowed father.

Cornelius III, was a mason by trade but in early life followed the sea for some years. He married in 1809, at Groton, CT, Abigail Lankton. After stopping at various places, among which was Fabrious, Onondaga County, NY. In 1827 they located on Oak Hill, Canisteo Township, but later removed in 1828 to Howard township, a short distance from his former home, where he afterward resided.

In 1811,he was living in New London, CT and was a seaman, sailing to Barbados on the Brig. Harriet, which departed New London on August 8, 1811. The ship's log lists him as a crewman, and was 36 years of age, born in New Bedford and living in New London. He was dark complexioned.

Cornelius married Lankton Abigail (Nabby) on 30 Aug 1809 in Groton, New London, CT. Abigail was born about 1779 in CT. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In March of 1813, Prince still had a farm in Saratoga next door to Joseph Guile and William Smith. In the 1820 census, Prince is living next door to his brother, Isaac in Cato, Cuyuga county, NY.

Prince, a quiet, thickset little man, had once been a sea captain. All of the Annable family were kind, hard-working gentle people. Prince married widow, Ruth Howland Dewell. To them was born nine children.

Prince moved to Sterling, Whiteside County, IL where he bought one hundred and sixty acres of Federal land on July 22, 1853. County 98, Sec. 29, Twp 22N, Archives Vol. 712, p 007. Section SW, range 06E, Record ID 249340

It is family tradition that he lived in a hamlet known as Hannibalsville, NY on the shores of Lake Ontario sometime during his adult life and before moving to Illinois. This was certainly named after the Annable families living in or near there. Eunice Annable, his sister, used the name Hannibal all her adult life in signing papers.

In the 1880 Federal Census of Otoe County, NE where his son, Isaac lived, it states that his father, Prince, was born in CT. and his mother, b. in NY.

Prince married Howland Ruth about 1804 in Prob. Saratoga County, NY. Ruth (daughter of Howland Silas and de LaFarge Sarah) was born on 20 Dec 1782 in Cuyuga County, NY; died on 26 Jul 1870 in Sterling, Whiteside County, IL. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

John Annable was living in Milo, Yates County, NY in 1830 according to the NY census.

It has been a family tradition that Eunice was born in New Bedford, but land records show the family was still in Dartmouth at the time of her birth. No birth records have not been found for the children of Lydia and Isaac Annable in Dartmouth. However, Lydia and Isaac were married and lived in Dartmouth until December of 1780 according to land records, when they moved to New Bedford, MA.

Census records show an Isaac Annable lived in Stillwater in 1800. This is probably Eunice's father.

She and Samuel Right Brown were married in Saratoga on 13 February, 1803. (This information was on a petition to the government to inquire of her eligibility for a land grant because Samuel had served as a volunteer and correspondant in the Volunteer Army in the War of 1812. She was denied the grant.) In this petition, it states that she never remarried but remained a widow of Samuel Right Brown for the rest of her life.

In the autobiography, "The Life of Thurlow Weed" , Weed who once worked for Samuel R. Brown in Auburn's Cuyuga Patriot printing office, wrote; 'Mrs. Brown was placid, emotionless and slipshod. Both were imperturbable. Nothing disturbed either. There was no regular hour for breakfast or dinner, but meals were always under or over done. In short, like a household described by an early English author,"everything upon the table was sour, except the vinegar." The printing sympathized with the housekeeping. This was certainly telling of her personality and character.

Weed also described the village of the Auburn, "as exceedingly muddy, rough-hewn and struggling."

Eunice was head of her household in the census of 1820 and 1825, listing six males and one female. She was not in any census in 1830. She could have moved to Cameron, Steuben County, NY and living with one of her children.

In the census for Torrey, Yates Co., in June 9, 1855, Eunice is listed in the household of her youngest son, Samuel Right Brown, Jr.

By June 19, 1860, she is listed in the household of her son, William Henry Harrison Brown and his wife, Elenor Jane. Samuel, Jr. and family had moved to Indiana and IL by this time.

It has been said that she became almost blind by the time she died. She is buried near her son, William Henry Harrison (Henry) and his wife, Jane; her son, Charles Volney and grandchild, John in the Brown family plot in City Hill Cemetery in Torry, Yates County, NY. All of the graves are next to the Uriah Townsend family plot and are notibly marked by a large brown granite monument marked,"Brown". On the backside of the Brown monument, it mentions Samuel R. Brown as being buried in Cherry Valley, NY.

Eunice married Brown Samuel Right (Wright) on 13 Feb 1803 in Saratoga, Saratoga County, New York. Samuel (son of BROWN Wright Samuel and NEWLAND Hannah, son of BROWN Wright Samuel and OLNEY Bethiah) was born on 26 Sep 1775 in Swanzey, Cheshire Co., NH; died on 15 Sep 1817 in Near Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY; was buried in Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY. Lydia married Fiske Ezra about 1803. Ezra was born on 26 Apr 1778 in Schuylerville, Saratoga County, NY; died in 1831 in Palmyra, Wayne County, NY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Hannah lived to be 92 years and seven months. She is buried in the Adam Castner plot. According to the "Home Book of the Darius Myer's Family" by Violet M. Beck; Adam Castner, husband of Hannah's was a wealthy cousin.

In the 1870, a widow, Hannah lived with her eldest child, Catherine L. Townssend husband, Charles J. Townsend.

I, Jonahton Delano, Junior of Dartmouth in the county of Bristol and province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, Marriner, being weak in body but sound and disposing mind and in memory, thanks be to God. Therefore I do make and devise this my last will and testament in manner and form following vs first and principally, I commend my soul into the honor of God that gave it: and my body I commit to the Earth to be decently buried therein at the direction of my Executor. The U. S. Census of 1850 of Saratoga, Saratoga County, New York lists Sarah living with William Annable. The 1855 Census, State of NY, lists the family of William Annable, but Sarah is not included. Since she had not died, and she is still absent at the 1860 Census, it may be that she had divorced Wiliam. Since her Will did not name either William H. Annable or his brother, Charles as heirs or nex of kin, it may be supposed that she was not their mother, but rather, probably, a step-mother. Isaac C. I. Barber may have been a son born of a previous marriage. Also in th 1850 census, it says that William is insane. Perhaps this is the reason Sarah left him.

In the 1855 New York Census, William is reported to have been born in Saratoga Co. and was 53 at the time of census.

There were several families of Anable/Annable (etc.) in the townships of Saratoga and Stillwater, Saratoga County, NY at the turn of the nineteenth century. It would appear that they were all related, but how is difficult to ascertain. Two masculine names predominate; Ephraim and Willaim.

Ephraim # 1 was born 3 March 1765 in Nova Scotia, entered the Service as as
revolutionary soldier in 1781 and relocated to Stillwater, Saratoga County, NY in or shortly after 1789; in September 1832, he applied for a pension.

Ephraim # 2 was born in 1782 and died June 1842 at the age of 59. His wife was Charlotte, born July 1788 and died January 1868 at 79 years, eight months. Some of their children were Elizabeth, b. January 1822, d. July 22, 1839, age 17 yr. 7 mos. Horace, b. February 1818, died August 14, 1838, age 20 yr. 7 mos. (Information from Card File, Saratoga County Historian's Office, Ballston Spa, NY)

Other descendants, listed in a deed recorded in Saratoga Co. Deed Book # 63, page 233 and dated June 15, 1850, when the heirs of Ephraim Annable disposed of some inherited property, are; Abner H. Annable and Sally Annable, his wife; Levi Annable and Loretta Annable, his wife; and James Inman and Lucy Ann Inman, his wife.

Ephraim # 3 had a wife named Mary A. who was born about 1849 and died July 21, 1887, and was buried in Joseph Roger's Cemetery, Saratoga, NY. This Ephraim is probably the son of the William Henry. Annable, who died in Ottowa County, Michigan in 1885; William H's probate file lists his son, Ephraim aged about 36 living in Saratoga County, NY in 1886.

In March 1865, William h. and Mary H. sold some property; Deed recorded in Deed Book 106, page 87. Mary H. died on May 5, 1865. (Sarah Hughes, Mary's mother had died in 1861.)

Williaim H. Annable moved his family to Ionia co., Michigan, where he had already purchased property (transaction recorded at Ionia Co., MI Land Office in Libr #49, p. 463 and Libr 56, p. 77.)

His household consisted of ; 1 male 16 yrs.and older, (including head of house) 1 male under 16yr. 5 females (including wife)

Ephraim # 3 was the firstborn son of William Henry Annable and his wife, Mary H. Hughson. He was born in 1848/49 at Dean's Corners, Saratoga, Saratoga Co.NY.

The records of the Greenfield Congregational Church contain the record of the marriage of " Annaball, Leonard, married at Stillwater on January 4, 1795 to Miss Rebecca Jacobs".

William # 1, was a contemporary of an Ephraim who ws a witness to a land transaction recorded in Saratoga County., Deed Book V, p. 80, dated September 23, 1831. he married Sarah E. Barber, (nee Esmond) widow of isaac Barber who died in 1827, and was the father of William Henry and Charles M. Annable. (Sarah E. Annable left her estate to Isaac C. I. Barber, her nearest of kin (Saratoga Co. Court Archives, Book 22, p. 169.)

William # 2 was William W. Annable, who, according to the 1850 Census of Stillwater, NY was 23 years old in 1850, placing his birth in 1826/27. He was the husband of Deborah___, who was born 1828 and died Sept. 26, 1847; and then Mary E. ____, born, 1829 and died May 5, 1865.

William W. and Mary E. Annable buried an infant son and a young daughter, Orlina, in the Joseph Rogers Cemetery. It is unknown if any children of this marriage survived to adulthood.

William # 3 was William Henry Annable, born around 1828. He married Mary H. Hughson and was the father of Ephraim and Estella Annable.

James Annable wa also a contemporary of Ephraim #1 and William #1 and is named as a witness to a land transaction by Ephraim Annable dated Sept. 29, 1827 and recorded in Saratoga county. Deed Book O, p. 307.
It is possible that James, Ephraim and William were brothers.

There is a possiblility that William moved to Steuben county, NY and died there.

OBITUARY

Isaac Annable, the oldest man in Otoe County, was born November 5, 1810
in Cayuga County, New York and died at this home, five miles north-east of Syracuse, Jan. 6, 1906, aged 95 years, 2 months and 1 day.

He came with his parents from New York to Illinois over fifty years ago where he was married to Anna Crichton. In 1854 they moved to Winona County, Minnesota. He was converted and baptized by Elder Hamlin, of the Baptist Church, at Pine Creek Valley, Minn., in the year 1855. In 1861, he with his family removed to Illinois and in 1873, came West and located on a farm five miles northeast of Syracuse, Nebraska.

There are left to mourn his loss, a widow and four children; tow sons and two daughters, Mrs. G. Murray, Mandon, S. D.; Mrs. A. L. Young, Syracuse, Neb.; Lorenzo Annable, Mead, Nebraska and George Annable, Farmington, New Mexico, all of whom were present at his funeral.

Six children were born to them, one dying in infancy and the youngest, a daughter, died about 23 years ago at the age of 15.

At the heart of his life ws a well-spring of human sympathy that all could feel. He held the unswerving confidence of his neighbors, was loved and trusted in life and is mourned and revered in death.

To his family who will ever cherish his memory, may they all in this hour of sad separation look to Him who is our life, our hope and our resurrection, for a complete unity in a home where there is no death.

ALBERT L. YOUNG is the owner of a very valuable and highly productive farm of 200 acres on section 35, in North Branch Precinct, and is one of the capable citizens of the county. He was born in Onondaga County, N. Y., on the 7th of March, 1852, and is the son of Josiah H. and Mary (Cook) Young. The father of our subject resides at Berlin. When Albert was a little fellow six years of age his mother died, having a place in his life that could never be filled by another.With the exception of about eighteen months in the years 1859-60, when our subject's father was on the Pacific Slope, during which period Albert lived with his grandparents and an uncle, he had remained with the family at home, and when, in 1872, his father came to Nebraska and settled on section 1, Syracuse Precinct, he accompanied him, and continued upon the farm as his father's helper for about four years.In 1876 Mr. Young was united in marriage with Lou E. Annabel, the amiable daughter of Isaac and Anna (Crichton) Annabel. This lady was born in Winona County, Minn., on the 16th of June, 1869. Her education was received in the district school. Mr. and Mrs. Young first settled upon the property where they now reside, the first purchase including 160 acres. This was speedily brought into shape and prepared for his purpose, well improved and supplied with a good residence and the needed outbuildings for farming purposes and stock-raising. The latter has been the chief occupation or our subject and that which has enabled him to make the success in life that he has.Isaac Annabel, the father of Mrs. Young, was born in Saratoga, N.Y., on the 5th of November, 1810, and was the son of Prince and Ruth (Howland) Annabel. The family is of French extraction, but for several generations have been citizens of New England. Mr. and Mrs. Annabel have four children living, viz: Lucy Jane, Lorenzo, George, and Lou E., the wife of our subject. Mr. and Mrs. Young are the parents of three children -- Nettie Bell, Guy Garfield and Ralph Annabel.Mr. and Mrs. Young have made many friends in this district, and are much esteemed for their personal qualities and worth. They move in the best local society and are always accorded a cordial welcome. Our subject is thoroughly interested in all questions of political importance, and usually votes the Republican ticket, of which party he has always been a firm friend and ardent admirer.

Charles Volney died without children. He was known by the name, Volney. He is buried in the W. H. Brown plot in City Hill Cemetery. He was 74 years old.
In the1830 census, he was living in Cameron, Steuben County as head of the household of his mother's household since her husband and his father had been dead 13 years (Sept. 1817). By this time, Achilles was no longer living at home but was married. Eunice, the mother is not living with the family either. Perhaps she was living with Achilles or possibly taking care of her father who was also a widower.

He lived next door to his uncle Cornelius, his mother's brother in Cameron.

In the 1860 census he was living in Italy, Yates County. NY.

In the 1870 Census for Torrey, he is shown living with his brother, William Henry Harrison Brown and his family. His mother, Eunice Annable Brown also lived with the family.

Archilles married first, Lucretia Ann Miller on 13 Feb. 1827 and married second, Angeline R. Davis on 27 June 1854. He went by the name of Calais according to "The Home Folks Book of the Darius Myer's Family", by Violet M. Beck.

Archilles moved his family to Papineau , Iroquois County, Illinois in the mid 1840s-50s, where his brother, Erasmus had also moved.

He is listed in the 1840 census living in Shawnee, Fountain County, Indiana, next door to his brother, Erasmus Brown and George Loghry.

In 1850 census for Iroquois County, IL, age 44 and having a wife, Lucy, age 42 yr., and a son, Guilford, age 17 yrs. He was a farmer and had no personal property or real estate.

His brother, Erasmus D. Brown, is shown as a land owner of 160 acres. He possible came after Erasmus was settled in the area.

From a newspaper report is the following. I don't know if it is the same Achilles M. Brown or not. The person murdered was George W. Routt of Obling, Crawford County, IL.

The People vs A. M. Brown, Third Day, Deposition of Samuel Wright, 3 Sept 1873, Office of the Clerk of the Court, Crawford County, Robinson, Illinois. Shot in his office by Achilles M. Brown, accused of philandering with Mr. Brown's wife. Shot in the chest and as he lay on the floor, shot in the ear with the bullet exiting his other ear. Mr. Brown was acquitted.

He also went by the names of Achilles V or AV.

Erasmus Darwin left Stillwater, NY early as a youngster with his family. They lived in several different places, including, Ballson Spa, Albany, Auburn and Caniesteo, Steuben Co. and Dresden, Yates County, NY.

He went to live briefly in Ohio, where Letty was living with the Schock family, in-laws of her brother, George. He and Letty were married about 1834 in New York. Their first two daughters were born in New York state.

He and Letty moved their small family to Shawnee, Fountain county, Indiana around 1838 where his third child, Mary, was born. His son, Allen, born in 1844 was his last child born in Indiana.

'Dar' and his familiy finally moved to the state of Illinois and settled in the wilderness area known as St. Anne sometime between 1844 and 1846 where his son, Samuel was born. Dar's brother, Achilles and his wife, Lucy, also came to IL.

An article written in the old book of the county history, 'Kankakee County History' is the following:

"Few of the early settlers or families of Kankakee County are better represented in its second generation both among its relief and active citizens, then that established here by Erasmus Brown and Letty Loughry Brown, the former born in New York in 1808. This worthy couple to whom in early life came the desire to travel West and ally their fortunes with its undeveloped strength, left their native New York state and settled in the Wilderness of what then was St. Anne but now is Pembroke township, Kankakee County. Loneliness and deprivation were their portion for they had little of this world's goods and there were few neighbors to whom they could turn for counsel or sympathy. Nevertheless, they had grit and determination and their farm yielded of its fertility in response to their untiring labor.

With the passing of years their family increased until seven children played around their hearthstone. Of these, Jane was the oldest." We know that eventually there were ten children born to this couple.

Sometime around 1856, Dar and Achilles were joined by their youngest brother, Samuel Right Brown, Jr. and his wife, Sally Ann Coss but wanting to move closer to his inlaws, Sally's sisters and other cousins, Samuel moved north to Algonquin after several years in the Iroquois-Kankakee county area and later to neighboring Cary, McHenry County, IL where he made his final home. His descendants live in that area today.

Erasmus married Loghry Lettice Lorena about 1834 in Oscaloosa, Mahaska County, OH. Lettice (daughter of Loghry Joseph Leander and Santee Mary) was born about 1820 in Cameron, Steuben Co., NY; died on 21 Dec 1893 in St. Anne, Kankakee Co., IL; was buried in Old Brown-Hanen Cemetery four miles east of Witchert in Pembroke Township on the old Brown farm.IL. Notes:

Robert E. Brown married Mary Loghry from Canisteo, Stueben County, NY., dau. of Joseph Leander and Mary Nancy ( Santee) Loghry on 14 Aug. 1831. They were married the same day in a double wedding with his sister, Juliette to Charles E.Loghry. Robert was known to his family as "Emm" as referred to in letters written in later years by his brother-in-law, Charles Loghry to Wm. Henry Harrison, (Henry) Loghry.

After "Emm" and Mary (Molly) were married, they lived for many years at Brown's Crossing where they conducted a tavern. This they sold in 1855 to Curtis Allen and removed to the Mitchell Ellison farm on North Hill, Cameron, where Emm died.

In a letter written by Charles Loghry to his son, Henry, from Cameron, March 15, 1880; "your unkel Emm is very poorley this winter he lais A bed the most of the time. He haint bin from home in nine years. He is nothing but skin and bones."

In the 1870 census for Cameron, Steuben county, NY, it mentioned one of the daughters, Anna, age 20, was idiotic.

The farm on North Hill is still in Loghry (Gerald and Sylvia Loghry) possession in 1998.

According to the History of Saratoga County, NY by Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester, 1878, Robert's father, Samuel R. Brown and family were in Saratoga Springs, Saratoga County, NY between the years 1809 and April of 1812 at which time he took his family to Albany, NY.

Robert married Loghry Mary on 14 Aug 1831 in Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY. Mary (daughter of Loghry Joseph Leander and Santee Mary) was born on 17 Oct 1815 in Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY; died on 29 Sep 1881 in Cameron, Steuben Co., NY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Juliette was the only daughter of Samuel and Eunice (Annable) Brown. On Aug. 14, 1831 she married Charles Loghry, son of Joseph Leander Loghry and Mary (Santee) Loughry of Cameron, Stueben County, NY. Her brother, Robert Emmett Brown and Charles' sister, Mary Loghry were married at the same time in a double wedding. After her marriage, she and Charles settled near the Oregon schoolhouse on the road to Brown's Crossing where John Hedges had formerly resided.

Brown's Crossing is at the foot of the Oregon schoolhouse road, down from North Hill Road where a large steel bridge crosses the Canisteo River. Juliette's brother, Robert Brown had a tavern near the river crossing and a farm directly across the river as well.

Julitette died shortly after the birth of her son, Franklin. She is buried at Brown's Crossing at the bottom of the hill on Oregon Schoolhouse Road and the Canisteo River.

The cemetery near the bridge at Brown's Crossing is the burying ground for some familiy members of the Santee, Moore, Loghry and Brown relatives. At one time there were as many as thirty five people buried at Brown's Crossing but today only one stone, that of Isaac Santee remains intact. Years ago when the river flooded, many of the bodies were washed from their resting places and their markers taken by the rushing river water.

Juliette's birth records have not been found. Her family was in Albany, Albany County, NY from April 1812 and moved to Auburn, Cayuga County in 1813. They continued to live in Auburn until the death of her father in Sept. of 1817.

Juliette married Loghry Charles L. on 14 Aug 1831 in Cameron, Steuben Co., NY. Charles (son of Loghry Joseph Leander and Santee Mary) was born on 30 Oct 1811 in Cameron, Steuben Co., NY; died on 13 Aug 1882 in Bath Township, Steuben Co., NY; was buried in Unionville Cemetery, Bath Township, Steuben Co. Notes:

William went by the name of Henry during his life. He married Elenor Jane Townsend,(known by Jane) dau. of Uriah Townsend of Dresden, Yates County,NY. At the time of his marriage, Henry was living in Cameron, NY according to " The Vital Records of Western New York" There is another birthdate of 2 Feb 1815. I don't know which one is correct.

In a letter written from Cameron, March 15, 1880, Charles Loghry, husband to Juliette Brown, sister to Henry; writes to his son, William Henry Harrison Loghry (Henry,the above's namesake) and mentions 'Uncle Henry', William Henry Harrison Brown.

At the time the 1870 Federal Census was taken for Torrey, Yates County, it shows that William and Jane were living next door to Wright Brown, Jr., his uncle.

Notes:

Samuel Right Brown Jr. was born about 2 months after his father died in Dresden, Yates County, NY. He married Sarah ( Sally) Ann Coss of Bath or Cameron, Steuben County, NY and had 10 children.

In early life, Sam settled on the Robert Water's farm on North Hill, Cameron which he bought of John Sherer, where he resided for eleven years. He ran a saw mill and rafted lumber on the river for a time. In 1852, he walked to Astubula, Ohio and assisted in clearing the site of the present city of Oberlin, Ohio. His brother-in-law, George William Loghry had gone there earlier and there married his first wife. Also, George's sister, Letty had gone to Astubula (Oberlin) to live with the Schocks (in-laws of her brother, George) after her mother died when she was thirteen years of age.

In 1855, Samuel is listed in theTorrey, Yates County, NY Federal Census. His mother, Eunice, was 72 years of age at the time and living with this family. He moved his wife and children to Algonquin Township, McHenry County, Illinois after first settling in Kankakee, Kankakee County for a short period sometime around 1856.

He followed his older brother, Erasmus Darwin Brown, who settled in St. Anne, Kankakee County after Erasmus and family had lived a few years in Fountain County, Indiana. Samuel and Sally's son, Melvin was born in St. Anne, Kankakee County on 3 April, 1858. After two years in the Kankakee area, Samuel moved north to Algonquin, McHenry County to be closer to his wife's sisters, Lucy Coss, wife of Asa L.Weaver and Matilda, wife of David Miller, both of Algonquin Township who had come to the area about the same time.

Upon arrival in Algonquin, Samuel and Sally rented a farm on which was an old house. It was partly covered with timber. He cleared off the land, drained it and put up a good set of buildings, to which a silo and other improvements were added. For years, Samuel made butter for private customers in addition to carrying on his farmings, becoming one of the well-known men of his community. In the 1860, Samuel was listed as a farmer. In 1870, a stonemason and still living in Algonquin. Living with the family in 1870 was Althea Brown, age 18, wife of his son, Samuel Right Brown, the 3rd. She was born in Illinois. Thomas Morin, age 38, born in Canada and was a farm laborer also lived with them.

On December 3, 1902, Samuel lost his wife, Sally. They are buried next to each other in the Brown family plot at Cary Cemetery, McHenry County, Cary, IL.


Prior to his death in 1909, he had been retired for seventeen years. He was the eldest Mason in the state. In Buffalo, NY. He also ate breakfast with the son of Sacajawea, the guide for Lewis and Clark on their expedition to the West. He helped organize the Algonquin Mutual Insurance Company in 1874. The Brown family was one of the best known ones in McHenry County, and its members during their long residence there have been connected with some of the most constructive work of their section, and were recognized as being typical of the advanced spirit which seemes to have prevailed in this portion of Illinois. In a letter below, written by Charles Loghry (brother-in-law to Samuel) to his son, Henry in the 1850s, he writes;

"Sam Brown has got home from the asilum and seams to bee all rite he Chops wood every day Brown's foxes (folks) is well and doing well they are in the the hoop pole business this winter."

It is apparent from letters written by Charles Loghry about his brother-in-law, Samuel Right Brown, Jr., he suffered some type of illness where he had to be institutionalized.

It is commonly believed that some form of mental illness was present in several of the Annable families according to a few descendants, thus shedding some light on the mental problems of Henry (William Henry Harrison Brown) and Samuel Brown, sons of Eunice Annable and Samuel Right Brown, Sr. In early history on the Peckhams family (Eunice Annable Brown's paternal grandparents side) there is mention of the "idiot" in the family back in the early 1700's.

Samuel was very involved in the town of Cary Station once he moved there from Algonquin. He as well as his daughter, Julia Ann worked very hard, keeping the local cemetery beautiful and peaceful-looking. It was in this light that he, FayetteThomas, E. Sprague and John Brandon each purchased a family monument of white Bronze, of T. D. Warwick, agent for a Detroit company. The first three named erected their monument in the Cary cemetery, which the Crystal Lake Herald article of March 3, 1882 , mentioned, 'will add much to its improvement. Mr. Crane of Janesville, who has done all in his power to improve our cemetery will be gratified to see those having relatives and friends buried here taking an interest also.'

Three Aged Ones Fall Beneath the Scythe of Time

Samuel R. Brown of Cary--Mrs. T. H. Ashton of Ridgefield- Mrs. Robert Baxter of Chicago

Samuel R. Brown was born in Dresden, Yates County, NY, November 17, 1817, and died at his home in Cary, Ill., February 4, 1909, aged 91, years, 2 months and 17 days.

He was married to Sally Ann Coss of Bath, Steuben County, NY, Jan 1, 1844. The family consisted of six sons and four daughters-S. R., Jr., E. D., Melvin and D. M., Mrs. Martha Osgood, Julia A. and Mrs. Dora Raue.

He resided in New York state until 1856, coming west and locating in McHenry County, where he resided until his death.

He was left fatherless in early infancy, and was thus thrown upon his own resources. He traveled on foot from his native state to Ashtabula County, Ohio, where the present city of Oberlin now stands. He helped the early pioneers of that section to clear the site of that city. Later in life he became an expert raftsman, piloting rafts down the Canisteo and Susquehanna rivers.

For seven years he owned and operated a sawmill at Cameron, Steuben County, N. Y., and after coming to Illinois engaged in farming on his farm, located near Cary.

His father, Samuel R. Brown, was associated in journalism with Soloman Southwick, at Albany, N. Y., and employed as a typesetter, Thurlow Weed, who afterward became a noted journalist and politician of New York city. His father was also an author of considerable prominence, one of his noted works being "The Western Gazetteer." He was also a volunteer in the War of 1812.

Mr. Brown was a man of sterling worth and strong convictions, kind and sympathetic in his nature, always generous to the needs of others, and his hospitality knew no bounds. He was of a cheerful, happy disposition, and ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. He was possessed of a modest, retiring nature, and only his most intimate friends could fully appreciate his worth. He was a great reader, and inherited from his father a love for literature. He was especiallly fond of Scott's poems, and after failing eyesight prevented him from reading, he delighted in quoting from this favorite authors up to a very short period previous to his death.

The community in which he resided is certainly better for his having lived in it. His was a noble character, and worthy of emulation. He was a member of the Masonic order for the past 61 years, having joined that order in Bath, N. Y., in 1848, later transferring his membership in Nunda Lodge 169, in 1867. Impressive funeral services were held at the M. E. Church on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 11 a. m., conducted by Rev. A. N. Foster of the Universalist church of Elgin. Music by the M. E. choir.

At the conclusion of the service at the church, the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the family lot, where the beautiful and impressive burial service of the Masonic order was given. The many lovely floral tributes attested the love and esteem in which he was held.

The following appropriate line from Bryant were read by the officiating clergyman:

The letters below, written in 1868, 1869 and 1880 seem to indicate Samuel and Sally were still in New York in the late 1860s but the census report for the township of Algonquin, McHenry County, IL show Samuel and Sally living there in 1860. Their son, Melvin was born in April, 1858 in Illinois, probably in Algonquin.

These letters were written by Charles Loghry to his son, William Henry Harrison Loghry. In them he mentions the mental condition of Samuel and that of his brother, William Henry Harrison Brown (Henry). Charles Loghry was married to Juliette Brown, sister to William and Samuel.

When you git this you must tell us how times is with you. We had A good crop of hay and winter wheat but Barley and oats was lite this year potatoes is A lite crop I have a good croop of buckwheat.

Know all men by these presents, that I, S. R. Brown Sr. of Cary Station, Illinois, being aged but of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me at any time heretofore made.

As to my worldly estate, Real or Personal I dispose thereof in the manner following--

First my will is, that all my just debts and funeral expenses shall by my exectutors hereinafter named, be paid ou of my Estate as soon after my decease as shall be found by them convenient,

Item- I give devise and bequeath my entire Estate to be divided equally between my sons S. R. Brown Jr., E. D. Brown, Melvin Brown, and D. M. Brown, and to my daughters Julia Brown, Martha Osgood, and Dora Raue and my Grandson Dexter D. Brown, share and share alike.

In the event of the death of my son S. R. Brown, Jr. before my death the bequeath as relates to him shall be void and his daughter being my Grand daughter, Alice is to receive One Thousand ($1,000.00) Dollars.

Lastly I do nominate and appoint my daughter Julia Brown, and my son E. D. Brown the executors of this my last Will and Testament.

In testimony whereof, I the said S. R. Brown Sr. have to this my last Will and Testament contained on one sheet of paper, subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 14th. day of August A. D. 1906.

In the History of McHenry County, IL , Vol. 2, pp 497-98, the following but not intirely accurate:

Samuel Right Brown, now deceased, was born at Bedford, Mass.,(he was born in Dresden, Yates Co., NY. His mother was born there) Nov. 17, 1817, and died at Cary, Ill., Februdary 2, 1908, having lived in retirement in that village for some seventeen years prior to his demise. He married at Bath, NY to Sallie Ann Cass (Coss), born June 3, 1817, at Bath, NY. After his marriage he came to Kankakee, IL. where a brother, Darien E. (Erasmus Darwin) Brown had already located, and about two years later, Samuel R. Brown came to McHenry County, to join Mrs. Brown's two sisters, Lucy, who was Mrs. A. L. Weaver; and Matilda, who was Mrs. David Miller, both of Algonquin Township, where their husbands had secured land from the government. Samuel R. Brown rented the farm he later bought, on which was an old house. It was partly covered with timber. He cleared off the land, drained it and put up a good set of buildings, to which a silo and other improvements have since been added. For years Mr. Brown made butter for private customers in addition to carrying on his farmings, becoming one of the well-known men of his community. On December 3, 1902, Mr. Brown had the misfortune to lose his wife. They were the parents of the following children: William C., who enlisted when only sixteen years old in Company I, Ninely-fifth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, under Captain James Nish, and he served through the Civil War, coming out of the conflict without any wounds but with his health so impaired that he died fifteen years later; Samuel K., (Samuel R., III) who is a well-known stockman, lives at Cary with his sister; Martha, who is the widow of Mark Osgood, also lives at Cary; Charlotte, who died at the age of eighteen years, had attended the academy at Elgin; Julia, who lives at Cary, is a very progressive lady, who during the World War was active in Red Cross work, and belongs to the Woman's Club, Royal Neighbors and Ladies' Aid Society; Darwin who is a prominent man and successful farmer of Lake County, IL; Melvin , who is deceased, was a prominent cement contractor, and passed away at Wancenda (Wauconda) IL in 1913; Daniel M., was a milk dealer of Chicago for some years, was educated in the Elgin Academy; and Dora, who married Ben Rand (Raue) of Crystal Lake, died when about fifty years of age. The Brown family is one of the best known ones in McHenry County, and its members during their long residence here have been connected with some of the most constructive work of their secation, and are recognized as being typical of the advanced spirit which seems to prevail in this poration of Illinois.

Samuel Right Brown Jr. was born about 2 months after his father died in Dresden, Yates County, NY. He married Sally Ann Coss of Bath or Cameron, Steuben County, NY and had 10 children.

In early life, Sam settled on the Robert Water's farm on North Hill, Cameron which he bought of John Sherer, where he resided for eleven years. He ran a saw mill and rafted lumber on the river for a time. In 1852, he walked to Astubula, Ohio and assisted in clearing the site of the present city of Oberlin, Ohio. His brother-in-law, George William Loghry had gone there earlier and there married his first wife. Also, George's sister, Letty had gone to Astubula (Oberlin) to live with the Schocks (in-laws of her brother, George) after her mother died when she was thirteen years of age.

In 1855, Samuel is listed in theTorrey, Yates County, NY Federal Census. His mother, Eunice, was 72 years of age at the time and living with this family. He moved his wife and children to Algonquin Township, McHenry County, Illinois after first settling in Kankakee, Kankakee County for a short period sometime around 1856.

He followed his older brother, Erasmus Darwin Brown, who settled in St. Anne, Kankakee County after Erasmus and family had lived a few years in Fountain County, Indiana. Samuel and Sally's son, Melvin was born in St. Anne, Kankakee County on 3 April, 1858. After two years in the Kankakee area, Samuel moved north to Algonquin, McHenry County to be closer to his wife's sisters, Lucy Coss, wife of Asa L.Weaver and Matilda, wife of David Miller, both of Algonquin Township who had come to the area about the same time.

Upon arrival in Algonquin, Samuel and Sally rented a farm on which was an old house. It was partly covered with timber. He cleared off the land, drained it and put up a good set of buildings, to which a silo and other improvements were added. For years, Samuel made butter for private customers in addition to carrying on his farmings, becoming one of the well-known men of his community. In the 1860, Samuel was listed as a farmer. In 1870, a stonemason and still living in Algonquin. Living with the family in 1870 was Althea Brown, age 18, wife of his son, Samuel Right Brown, the 3rd. She was born in Illinois. Thomas Morin, age 38, born in Canada and was a farm laborer also lived with them.

On December 3, 1902, Samuel lost his wife, Sally. They are buried next to each other in the Brown family plot at Cary Cemetery, McHenry County, Cary, IL.


Prior to his death in 1909, he had been retired for seventeen years. He was the eldest Mason in the state. In Buffalo, NY. He also ate breakfast with the son of Sacajawea, the guide for Lewis and Clark on their expedition to the West. He helped organize the Algonquin Mutual Insurance Company in 1874. The Brown family was one of the best known ones in McHenry County, and its members during their long residence there have been connected with some of the most constructive work of their section, and were recognized as being typical of the advanced spirit which seemes to have prevailed in this portion of Illinois. In a letter below, written by Charles Loghry (brother-in-law to Samuel) to his son, Henry in the 1850s, he writes;

"Sam Brown has got home from the asilum and seams to bee all rite he Chops wood every day Brown's foxes (folks) is well and doing well they are in the the hoop pole business this winter."

It is apparent from letters written by Charles Loghry about his brother-in-law, Samuel Right Brown, Jr., he suffered some type of illness where he had to be institutionalized.

It is commonly believed that some form of mental illness was present in several of the Annable families according to a few descendants, thus shedding some light on the mental problems of Henry (William Henry Harrison Brown) and Samuel Brown, sons of Eunice Annable and Samuel Right Brown, Sr. In early history on the Peckhams family (Eunice Annable Brown's paternal grandparents side) there is mention of the "idiot" in the family back in the early 1700's.

Samuel was very involved in the town of Cary Station once he moved there from Algonquin. He as well as his daughter, Julia Ann worked very hard, keeping the local cemetery beautiful and peaceful-looking. It was in this light that he, FayetteThomas, E. Sprague and John Brandon each purchased a family monument of white Bronze, of T. D. Warwick, agent for a Detroit company. The first three named erected their monument in the Cary cemetery, which the Crystal Lake Herald article of March 3, 1882 , mentioned, 'will add much to its improvement. Mr. Crane of Janesville, who has done all in his power to improve our cemetery will be gratified to see those having relatives and friends buried here taking an interest also.'

Three Aged Ones Fall Beneath the Scythe of Time

Samuel R. Brown of Cary--Mrs. T. H. Ashton of Ridgefield- Mrs. Robert Baxter of Chicago

Samuel R. Brown was born in Dresden, Yates County, NY, November 17, 1817, and died at his home in Cary, Ill., February 4, 1909, aged 91, years, 2 months and 17 days.

He was married to Sally Ann Coss of Bath, Steuben County, NY, Jan 1, 1844. The family consisted of six sons and four daughters-S. R., Jr., E. D., Melvin and D. M., Mrs. Martha Osgood, Julia A. and Mrs. Dora Raue.

He resided in New York state until 1856, coming west and locating in McHenry County, where he resided until his death.

He was left fatherless in early infancy, and was thus thrown upon his own resources. He traveled on foot from his native state to Ashtabula County, Ohio, where the present city of Oberlin now stands. He helped the early pioneers of that section to clear the site of that city. Later in life he became an expert raftsman, piloting rafts down the Canisteo and Susquehanna rivers.

For seven years he owned and operated a sawmill at Cameron, Steuben County, N. Y., and after coming to Illinois engaged in farming on his farm, located near Cary.

His father, Samuel R. Brown, was associated in journalism with Soloman Southwick, at Albany, N. Y., and employed as a typesetter, Thurlow Weed, who afterward became a noted journalist and politician of New York city. His father was also an author of considerable prominence, one of his noted works being "The Western Gazetteer." He was also a volunteer in the War of 1812.

Mr. Brown was a man of sterling worth and strong convictions, kind and sympathetic in his nature, always generous to the needs of others, and his hospitality knew no bounds. He was of a cheerful, happy disposition, and ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. He was possessed of a modest, retiring nature, and only his most intimate friends could fully appreciate his worth. He was a great reader, and inherited from his father a love for literature. He was especiallly fond of Scott's poems, and after failing eyesight prevented him from reading, he delighted in quoting from this favorite authors up to a very short period previous to his death.

The community in which he resided is certainly better for his having lived in it. His was a noble character, and worthy of emulation. He was a member of the Masonic order for the past 61 years, having joined that order in Bath, N. Y., in 1848, later transferring his membership in Nunda Lodge 169, in 1867. Impressive funeral services were held at the M. E. Church on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 11 a. m., conducted by Rev. A. N. Foster of the Universalist church of Elgin. Music by the M. E. choir.

At the conclusion of the service at the church, the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the family lot, where the beautiful and impressive burial service of the Masonic order was given. The many lovely floral tributes attested the love and esteem in which he was held.

The following appropriate line from Bryant were read by the officiating clergyman:

The letters below, written in 1868, 1869 and 1880 seem to indicate Samuel and Sally were still in New York in the late 1860s but the census report for the township of Algonquin, McHenry County, IL show Samuel and Sally living there in 1860. Their son, Melvin was born in April, 1858 in Illinois, probably in Algonquin.

These letters were written by Charles Loghry to his son, William Henry Harrison Loghry. In them he mentions the mental condition of Samuel and that of his brother, William Henry Harrison Brown (Henry). Charles Loghry was married to Juliette Brown, sister to William and Samuel.

When you git this you must tell us how times is with you. We had A good crop of hay and winter wheat but Barley and oats was lite this year potatoes is A lite crop I have a good croop of buckwheat.

We have had the hotest weather that was ever none in this country. it was so hot it was all most imposibel to work.

Know all men by these presents, that I, S. R. Brown Sr. of Cary Station, Illinois, being aged but of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me at any time heretofore made.

As to my worldly estate, Real or Personal I dispose thereof in the manner following--

First my will is, that all my just debts and funeral expenses shall by my exectutors hereinafter named, be paid ou of my Estate as soon after my decease as shall be found by them convenient,

Item- I give devise and bequeath my entire Estate to be divided equally between my sons S. R. Brown Jr., E. D. Brown, Melvin Brown, and D. M. Brown, and to my daughters Julia Brown, Martha Osgood, and Dora Raue and my Grandson Dexter D. Brown, share and share alike.

In the event of the death of my son S. R. Brown, Jr. before my death the bequeath as relates to him shall be void and his daughter being my Grand daughter, Alice is to receive One Thousand ($1,000.00) Dollars.

Lastly I do nominate and appoint my daughter Julia Brown, and my son E. D. Brown the executors of this my last Will and Testament.

In testimony whereof, I the said S. R. Brown Sr. have to this my last Will and Testament contained on one sheet of paper, subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 14th. day of August A. D. 1906.

Jonathon Delano, Jr.of Providence, Saratoga county,NY who on March 11, 1817 was the coroner for this town. In the 1820 Census for Providence, Jonathon is listed as head of household, white male under ten, 1; males ten and under sixteen, 2; males of twenty six year and under forty five, including head of household, 1; white female under ten, 1; white female twenty six but under forty five years, 1; Number of persons engaged in agriculture, 1.

In 1821, the family moved to Orleans County, NY where he worked as a carpenter and a grocer. In 1834, Jonathon moved again to the town of Akron, Erie County,NY and organized the Akron Water Cement Co. He died in Akron on 13 Apr 1843. However, his war pension papers say he died in Newstead, NY.

He is listed as William W. (sic) Annable, died in Jamestown, age 56, married. He is said to have died of "Exzemia". All particulars are correct except middle initial. To ascertain that this was william H. Annable, a copy of the Probate Record of the estate was obtained. The record left no doubt that this was the father of Estella Annable Sprague, for she is named in the record. The contents of the Probate Record state that William H. Annable died on the 11th day of September, 1885.

Cornelius served in the military between 1862 and 1863, being discharged with a disability.
He served under Captain George W. Bullock's Company G, 18th Michigan Infantry, mustered in 24th day of December 1862, to serve three years and was discharged from teh service of the united Stateds, 8th day of June 1863 by reason of " a Surgeon's certificate of disability."

According to Homestead file, Serial Patent Number MI NO S/N MI2520 478 received from National Archives, Nov. 2000, a statement from a Oliver P. Stone, "The letter "J" in his name was adopted by himself since his discharge from the Army:, dated Sept. 1877 as statement of verification of Cornelius J. Annable.

Guilford became mentally ill during his marriage to Sarah and had to be taken by arrest to the Insane Asylum. He was declared mentally imcompetant on July 15th, 1888 at the court in Watseka, Iroquois County, IL. The Writ was signed by Clerk of the county court, B. F. Price.

On July 16, 1888, Sarah E. Brown, wife of Guilford, petitioned the court to appoint a conservator for him. Arthur W. Frogge was appointed conservator for him.

On April of 1889, a copy of verdict of jury to send Guilford to a hospital was issued:

As to the Insanity of Guilford D. Brown:

On the first day of May, 1889 in proceedings had in said Court in the above entitled "An Act to revise the law in relation to the commitment and detention of Lunatics." and Act amendatory thereof approved June 13, 1887, the Jury rendered the following verdict:

We, the undersigned, Jurors, in the case of Guilford D. Brown alleged to be insane, having heard the evidence in the case. are satisfied that said Guilford D. Brown is insane, and a fit person to be sent to a State Hospital for the Insane; that he is a resident of the State of Illinois and County of Iroquois, that his age is 57 years; and that his disease is of about 1 month of ? duration; that the cause is unknown.

that the disease is not with him heriditary; that he is not subject to Epilepsy, and that he does not manifest homicidal or suicidal tendencies, that he is free from vermin, and is not affected by any contagious or infectious disease, and is not an idiot; that he is not a pauper, and that said Guilford D. Brown was in person actually present during said Inquistition, with full liberty to be heard in defense.

And we further find the said Guilford D. Brown has property which he is unfit to properly manage or control, and which is in danger of waste and depreciation, and that the appointment of a Conservator for said Guilford D. Brown is necessary.

May of 1889, a warrent for the arrest of Guilford E. Brown was issued by the county clerk of Iroquois County, IL B. F. Price, to have him conveyed to Eastern Illinois Hospital for the Insane.

On Oct. 14, 1889, Sarah Brown, wife of Guilford, wrote to the Hon. County Judge of Watseka, IL. to have Arthur W. Frogge appointed conservator of the her husband's property. However, he was never qualified and was never appointed.

In October 1899, Guilford presented to the court that in July 1888, he was judged insane. That Arthur W. Frogge was appointed conservator for him but the appointment was never made because Frogge did not qualify for such and no appointment was ever made.

He petitioned that further, he was at the time of being adjudged insane, committed to the Eastern Illinois Hospital for the Insane, that about the 10th day of June, 1897, the authorities of the said Hospital refused longer to keep him in custody and he was transferred to the county Farm of the said county of Iroquois, where he remained until August, 1897, when he was discharged.

The petitioner shows unto this court that for the past two years he has been perfectly restored to his reason, and is entirely rational in all and every respect, that since that time he has done business for himself and one of his sons in farming and handling, managing and selling stock of various kinds, and that he now requests a hearing to be officially declared to be restored to his reason.

Your petitioner represents that he is the owner of some land in said county, which he desires to dispose of in order to give proper and sufficient title. He asks that the proceedings may be had and prays that upon a hearing thereof he may be adjudged to be fully restored to reason , and have the care, management and control of the said property.

The Brown cemetery was on the Hoekstra farm and in 1965, Mr. Hoekstra paid someone with a bulldozer to plow it under including the tombstones so he could farm the land!

A solitary grave in the forks of the old and new Oregon Roads, each 15 rods from Brown's Crossing Cemetery, near River Road intersection is the resting place of Eunice Etta, who died at the young age of 16 years, five months. She was named after her paternal grandmother, Eunice M. Annable/Annible Brown. She was a twin sister of Emmitt Loghry Brown.

Brown's Crossing is directly across the road from this area, next to a steel bridge over the Canisteo River, located on River Road in Steuben, Steuben County, NY.

An attempt to find this grave by the writer was impossible with the overgrowth of brush, trees and the investation of rattlesnakes in the area.

Emmett was a twin to his sister, Eunice Etta Brown. Emmett, (Robert) never married. In his later years, he moved to Horseheads, Chemung County,NY and lived with his spinster sister, Mary Jane Brown. Also Juliett Brown McDonald lived in Horseheads as well as brother, Samuel.

William Henry Harrison, a farmer, was named after his uncle, Willaim Henry Harrison Brown but went by the name of" Henry" as recorded in letters to him from his father, Charles, written between 1868-1880 from Cameron, Steuben County, NY.

Henry followed his Aunt Letty (Lettice Loghry Brown) and Uncle Dar (Erasmus Darwin Brown) and other friends of the family to St. Anne and Momence, Kankakee County, Illinois. After Henry married Hannahretta Sicklar Swan, they lived on a farm near Waldron, IL until 1899 when they moved to Fowler, Indiana.

William joined the Union army on March 29, 1864 and was mustered in April 30, 1864. Henry was with the 15th Regiment of Illinois Infantry, as a private. He was sent to Lawton, Millen County Georgia on November 11, 1864. Exchanged April 1865; mustered out May 30, 1865, at Springfield, IL. He was captured at Altoona on Oct 5, 1864, Georgia while guarding a railroad in the rear of Sherman's army and was held for seven months in the terrible Andersonville Prison.

During his internment, with Henry Wirz, Superintendant of the prison, he lived on the ration of a quarter of a pound of fat meat and a half-pint of meal a day.

"To all whom it may concern:
Know ye that William H. Loghry, a Private of Captain John W. Luke Company "E" 15th Regiment of Illinois Infantry Volunteers who was enrolled on the 29th day of March one thousand eight hundred and 64 to serve three years or during the war is hereby Discharged from the service of the United States this 30th day of May, 1865 at Springfield, Illinois by reason of Telegram from War Dept. dated May 12th, 1865. (No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist.)

Said William H. Loghry, born in the State of New York, is 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair and occupation when enrolled, a farmer.

Given at Springfield, Ills. this Third day of July, 1865.

Death took Elizabeth away during Henry's absence, leaving their three small children homeless. After Elizabeth's death, Henry married widow, Hannahretta Sicklar Swan. They lived on a farm near Waldron, Illinois until 1899, when they moved to Fowler, Indiana. Henry was an enthusiastic G. A. R. (S.A.R.?) and his wife was an active member of the W. R. C. Both were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Mr. Loghry was a great reader, very interested in politics. He was a Democrat until McKinley ran for President and then he changed to the Republican Party. In his latter days he was hard of hearing and paralytic
strokes.

Mr. Loghry was an enthusiastic G. A. R. and Mrs. Loghry was an active member of the W. R. C. Both were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Mrs.Hannahretta Loghry died of pnuemonia on Feb. 29, 1908, in Fowler, Indiana and afterwards Mr. Loghry moved to Momence, Kankakee County, IL where his lived with his daughter, Mrs. Mary Loghry DuFrain until his death of bronchial pnuemonia on December 26, 1911. Both Mr. and Mrs. Loghry are buried in the family plot in Aroma Park Cemetery, Waldron, Kankakee County, IL.

When you git this you must tell us how times is with you. We had A good crop of hay and winter wheat but Barley and oats was lite this year potatoes is A lite crop I have a good croop of buckwheat.
I am going to rite to franklin Loghry*. I begin to think that he has forgotten us it has ben A long time sinse he has rote to us. tell him to rite and let us noe what he is doing.
We have had the hotest weather that was ever none in this country. it was so hot it was all most imposibel to work.
I have sowed one peis of wheat and am redy to sow five acors more this week. I have had the falow ready two weeks.
We are well to day and nobody but us two hear. Ada* is to sunday school while I am riting.

Well Henry Loghry it has bin A long time since we have heard from you you dont rite very often and today I thaut that I woud rite you a few lines to let you noe that we are in the land of the living but not very smart this winter I have bin qite poorley this winter and lame not abel to doe my chores nor to cut my wood I am giting old and will soon be out of this world and it wont mater how qick if I am prepard for that day that day will surly come prepared or not Ada and her man is with us this winter and will stay with us this year or that is the talk now if nothing hapens. We have had A very warm winter and noe snow it has bin rather unheathy this winter. The following is from a letter written by Phil Loghry, gg-grandson of William H. H. Loghry:

By the way, he generally preferred to use his second name, Henry. Henry enlisted in the Union Army on March 29, 1864. He was later captured by the Confederate Army, and held for seven months in the Andersonville Prison. He was ultimately released on a prisoner exchange agreement, April 1, 1865, and was honorably discharged on May 30, 1865. During his time in prison, his wife, Elizabeth took ill and died, leaving their children (Charles, JULIA, and Freddie) homeless. By the way, Freddie was a girl...notice the female spelling of the name; also Charles' obit states his brother (Frank), and two sisters (JULIA and Freddie) preceded him in death. Ok, back to the homeless children; I can only assume that brother Frank and wife Elizabeth Sicklar Loghry took the children into their home and cared for them until after their father was discharged from the Army, since both families at that time lived in St. Anne, ILL. (Real estate records show Frank as owning a home in St. Anne during this period. Henry is not listed of owning property there.) Some of this is only speculation on my part, but it could answer the confusion about who JULIA's parents were...I have no doubt that Wm. Henry, and Elizabeth Williams Loghry were her parents, but (speculation) Uncle Frank and Aunt Elizabeth Sicklar Loghry took her & siblings in for quite a long time, since father Henry needed to re-establish a home after the war. On Oct 16, 1866, William Henry married again, to Mrs. Henrietta Swan, a soldier's widow. There were nine children from this union. Children living to mourn his death, Sept. 6, 1911...Charles Franklin Loghry (my Great Grandfather) Julia E. SWAN of Fowler, Indiana, Freddie Loghry, Dora & Mary Dufrain of Momence, Ill., Retta Fornier, Minn; and Myron Loghry of Tuscola Ill.

Hannahretta was born on 20 May 1840 in Marion, either Hancock or Marion County, OH; died on 29 Feb 1908 in Kankakee County, IL; was buried in Aroma Park Cemetery, Waldron, Kankakee County, Illinois, usa. Franklin and his brother William, moved from Cameron, Steuben County, NY to Waldron, Kankakee County, IL sometime before 1860. Both received $50.00 from the estate of their father, Charles Loghry who died in 1882.

Franklin, according to Ellen Cleff, daughter of Franklin, became crippled due to being thrown off a porch by his step-mother, Phoebe Ann Chisholm.

J. married Sicklar Eliza Jane on 01 Aug 1866 in Kankakee County, Il. Eliza was born about 1847 in Terre Haute, IN. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Charles Volney went by the name of Volney, according to the 1870 Census report for Torrey, Yates Co. NY.

The family lived in Romulas, Seneca County, NY during the 1880 Federal census. In 1910, he was living in Geneva, Ontario county, NY where John A. Staysa and wife, Juliett, Emmett's sister lived.

Emmett and his children, Gertrude and Fred, were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Ovid, Seneca co., NY in the 1870s. Aslo listed was a Priscilla Brown. Had he remarried to this woman?

Emmett, age 67, is listed in the 1910 census for Geneva, Ontario County, NY as a widower and worked as a porter at a sanitarium.

In 1920, he is living with his son, Fred H. Brown in Denver, CO.
Erasmus moved from NY to Denver, Colorado and was still living there in 1923 as was stated in his brother, Jeff's obituary.

Emmett married Wilson Jennie Delia on 03 Aug 1870 in Romulas, Seneca County, NY. Jennie was born on 22 Apr 1854 in NY; died in 1885 in Romulus, Seneca County, NY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In the 1900 census, T. Jeff was living with his sister, Mary M, in Naples, Ontario county, NY.

Death of J. T. Brown

It is doubtful if the death of any person could have caused more regret than that of Jefferson T. Brown, who passed away at his home at “Home Comfort” on West Main street, Saturday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock. Mr. Brown had been in poor health for the past six weeks, having had an attack of appendicitis and owing to his advanced age the doctors thought best not to operate for. He seemed to be improving nicely until the death of his sister, Mrs. J. A. Staysa, and from that time he gave up interest in life and gradually sank away.

Mr. Brown was born in Scips, Seneca County, [corrected, possibly by Fred H. Brown, to say Milo, Yates County] March 30, 1850, and was the son of William H. and Jane Eleanor Brown. He had spent the greater part of his life in Yates and Ontario counties where he was in the hotel business for about forty-three years.

There are many interesting facts in regards to Mr. Brown’s connection with the hotel business, one being that he himself was a man of strict temperate habits, and his hotels were always known for their high character, and many a traveling man has been known to exclaim that they would go twenty miles in order to put up at the Brown Hotel. Mr. Brown was also much interested in good horses, and was able to give the pedigree of many of the best ones.

When about twenty one years of age Mr. Brown was united in marriage to Miss Alice Stebbins of Branchport, who died about twelve years ago.

Seven years ago Mr. Brown came to Alden to live and during that time has made himself generally liked because of his kind, courteous, and gentlemanly manners and while of a good nature, he made many friends.

Mr. Brown leaves to mourn his death one brother Emmett E. Brown of Denver, Colo., and a sister, Miss Mary M. Brown of Alden, also a brother-in-law, John A. Staysa.

In accordance with his wishes a brief funeral was conducted from his home Monday morning at 8 o’clock and his remains were taken to Gorham and buried in the family lot in the village cemetery.


In the 1880 census, Jeff and his wife, Alice, were living with his father and mother in Milo, Yates county,NY. Both he and his father were in the hotel business.

Thomas married Stebbins Alice M. in 1871. Alice was born about 1853; died about 1911 in Gorham, Ontario County, NY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In the 1910 Federal census for Naples, Ontario County, NY, Mary is a housekeeper at her brother's hotel. She was still unmarried and 58 years old. By 1930, she was back in Milo, Yates County, NY where she was a resident in a nursing home. She is buried in the Brown family plot next to her brother, Thomas Jefferson Brown, in the New Gorham Cemetery, Gorham, Ontario County, NY.

Juliette was a twin sister to John Henry Brown. She was known as Ettie.

Juliette married Staysa John A. in 1890. John was born in Mar 1854 in PA; died in 1931 in Gorham, Ontario County, NY; was buried in New Gorham Cemetery, Gorham, Ontario County, NY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Charles died at the age of two years. His father's obituary says he was born near Bath, NY...The family owned a farm in Cameron, Steuben Co. near Bath.

Samuel Right Brown was the third to be of that name, being named after his father and grandfather but preferred to be called 'Wright.' He was just a small boy when the family left Bath, Steuben county, NY for the 'new frontier' of the prairies in northwestern Illinois.

He is mentioned in an article in the " History of McHenry County", published in 1968, on early settlers in the county, as being a stock buyer when he was older. He was also a butcher, having a market in several buildings at Cary Station.

An article published in the Nunda Herald on Feb. 17, 1882 proclaims, 'S. R. Brown is still the reliable stock buyer of Cary. Yes, they say he left about 3 P. M. but! when, oh when did he return?' A month later in an article published in the Crystal Lake Herald on March 3, 1882, 'Wright Brown has rented and fitted up a room in the old Sprague building for a meat market, surely Cary is a booming'. By March 17th, he was in business and advertising his meat in the Nunda Herald, 'Beef-steak at Brown's for 10 & 12cts.'

In the same issue of the Herald is the following on the town of Cary by the reporter, Topsey; 'Cary is pretty lively just at present, that is as lively as a town of its size could be expected but with all its liveliness it lacks many things and among them is a good boarding house although it boasts of one hotel, its capacity can not accommodate more than the traveling public and workmen now engaged in the construction of the bridge and at the ice-house find it to be a pretty hard task to find a boarding place many of them being required to return to Janesville after their days work and back again in the morning.'

Either the rent or the location didn't suit him for in July of 1884, Wright moved into the Aylesworth store building, according to the Nunda Herald July 18, 1884 edition.

Wright became a widow at an early age, his wife dying at the age of 19 and leaving a seven-month old daughter to raise. He never remarried. At some point he moved to Dupree, South Dakota but moved back to Clary.IL.

After his daughter, Alice married and moved to Clarion, Iowa, he would visit her and his grandchildren often.

In the Crystal Lake Herald, published Mar, 3, 1927, Wright's obituary was published as follows:

Samuel Right Brown

Samuel Right Brown, 79, died Feb. 24, 1927 at Wauconda.

Mr. Brown had been in poor health for the last five years. He was born at Bath, N. Y. , Nov. 17, 1848. His parents were Samuel R. and Sallie Ann Brown and he came west with them when eight years old. They were pioneers in this section of the country.

He was married in 1868 to Althea Champlin who died when she was but 19 years old, leaving a child 7 months old, now Mrs. Arthur Richards of Clarion, Ia. He also leaves to mourn his death two brothers, Melvin and Darwin Brown of Wauconda, a sister, Mrs. Martha Osgood of Crystal Lake, and six grandchildren.

He was a resident of this courntry all his life and was very succssful as a stock buyer. He often went to Clarion, Ia., to visit his daughter.

Funeral services were held at Warner's Funeral Home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and were in charge of the Rev. R. W. Putnam, burial taking place in the Union cemetery. Rev. Putnam and Earnest Colby san "Abide With Me, " and "We May Not Climb the Heavenly Steps."

Mr. Brown was well-liked and he numbered his friends widely. He made friends and acquaintances wherever he went and he lived a useful life.

He is buried in Union Cemetery in Crystla Lake, IL but no headstone exits today. Only cemetery records mention his burial.

Samuel married Champlin Nancy Althea on 03 Apr 1870 in McHenry County, Il. Nancy was born on 02 May 1852 in Sherburne Chenango County, NY; died on 18 Aug 1871 in Algonquin, McHenry County, IL; was buried in Union Cemetery, Crystal Lake, McHenry County, IL. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

William served in Company I, 95th Regiment of Illinois Army Volunteers during the Civil War. In the Muster and Descriptive Roll of Company I, he is described as: Rank; Private, Age; 18, 5'9''tall, Light hair, dark eyes and light complexion, not married, a farmer, born in Steuben, NY, joined the service on 7 Dec. 1863 at Woodstock, IL and enrolled by Captain James Nash for a period of 3 years. Mustered into service one day later, December 8, 1863 at Springfield, IL by Lt. Hubb.

On July 25,1865, he was transferred to C. K. 47 Illinois Infantry S. O. NO.122, hold to discharge 16 AC. and was discharged on Aug. 7, 1865 at Springfield, IL by Capt. Hubb.

On the discharge, it gives his home address as Algonquin, IL.

William married Harback Francis LaJune on 12 Mar 1874 in McHenry County, Il. Francis was born on 22 Jul 1850 in NY; died on 25 Jun 1909 in Cary Station, McHenry Co., IL; was buried on 27 Jun 1909 in Cary Cemetery, Cary, McHenry County, IL. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Martha died a widow at 9:15 A. M. on Apr. 3, 1939. She had been a housewife for 50 years and had lived at 322 Brink Street, Cary, McHenry Co. IL for the last two years of her life. Although she was senile in her later years, her cause of death as stated on her death certificate, # 16728, was myocarditis. Her sister, Dora Raue, (Mrs. Ben Raue) was the informant. No autopsy was performed.

In an article under the heading of CARY ACTIVITIES AND HAPPENINGS, published in the Crystal Lake Herald on February 20, 1930 is the following:

MRS. OSGOOD HONORED ON BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY

Several friends of Mrs. Martha Osgood gathered at her home in Wauconda Wednesday afternoon, Feb.12 in honor of her birthday anniversary.

A very pleasant aftternoon was spent with Mrs. Osgood, at the close of which refreshments of sandwiches, pickles, coffee, cake and ice cream were served; these having been prepared by the guest.

Mrs. Osgood's cousin, Mrs. Geradine Smith, is spending the winter months with her.

Those who enjoyed this delightful afternoon together were: Mrs. George Lindsey, Mrs. Ben Raue, Miss Faye Brink, Mrs. F. S. Lindsey and Mrs. Will Trout of Cary and Mrs. Sydney Osgood and two children of Wauconda.

Family/Spouse: Osgood Franklin. Franklin was born in 1848 in NY; died in 1913 in Janesville, Rock County, WI; was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Janesville, Rock County, WI. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

According to her death certificate, she had been a seamtress for 30 years but retired at the time of her death. Geraldine Smith, a cousin from Chicago, Illinois, who probably took care of her in her last days is shown as the informant on the certificate. It also shows that she was single. Not widowed or married. She died at the age of 68 years old. The cause of her death is unclear on the copied death certificate but it mentions something in the right breast. In her obituary, it states that she died of cancer after suffering from extreme pain due to her illness for two months. She died at her home on Saturday, March 25, 1922 at 11o'clock in the morning. The funeral took place there as well and she was buried in the family plot at Cary Cemetery, Cary, IL. At the time of her death, she was survived by three brothers; Samuel Right Brown, III of Cary, Erasmus Darwin and Melvin of Wauconda and one sister, Martha Brown Osgood of Cary.

Notes:

Erasmus Darwin, like his uncle and namesake, went by the name of Darwin all his life. He lived his life in Wauconda, WI as did his son and daughter. His brother, Melvin spent the last twenty years of his life in Wauconda also. They lived on a farm called Maplewood Farm. In his obituary, it states that he came to Cary in May of 1856 when he was about six months old. The family lived previously in Kankakee County before moving to McHenry County.

Erasmus married Brooks Sarah A. on 31 Dec 1876 in McHenry County, Il. Sarah was born in Jun 1858 in IL; died on 05 Feb 1921 in Wauconda, Lake County, Il; was buried in Wauconda Cemetery, Wauconda, Lake County, Il. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
