James served as volunteer teamster and surveyer under General Custer. James and Jane served on the town and school board in Beaulieu and were instrumental in starting the Hart School.

Gertrude and Grandpa Hart were best buddies when they were young. Great Grandpa James Hart drove a wagon with General Custer at the age of 16. He was apparently orphaned at a very early age. Took care of his siblings because he had some of them living with him after he married our grandmother, Jane Wamsley. In the early 1900's when the native indians were first able to sell their land, the Hart's (James) moved to the Menhoman area and bought a farm.

James farmed in Glenwood, MN from 1879 to 1901.
James and Jane served on the town and school board in Beaulieu and were instrumental in starting the Hart School.

JAMES R. HART 1855-1935
James R. Hart was born in Madison, Wisconsin on September 25, 1855. His father was Patrick Hart who was born in Ireland on June 15,1829. Patrick.was married in
Ireland on July 10, 1845 and died June 10, 1873. He is buried in the Lake Amelia Cemetery in Pope County, Minnesota. James came to Glenwood, Minnesota with his
parents when quite young. He married Jane Wamsley in Glenwood in 1879 and farmed near there until 1901. Their children were all born near there at Villard, a town
which came into existence later. Mr. Hart served as volunteer teamster and as a surveyor under General George A. Custer in 1876.
The Hart's came to Lagarde Township, Mahnomen County, in 1904 and James farmed there until his wife died on May 23, 1923. After that, he and his younger children
went to live with son, Bert on what was known as the Taylor farm. James helped his son with the farm work until Bert moved to Bemidji in 1927. From then he divided his time with family members until his death on July 13, 1935 at the Frank Hart home. This had been the original family home.

The James R. Hart Family

It was in 1905, three years before the building of the railroad, that James and Jane Hart, with their ten children, decided to leave their home at Villard, Minnesota and come to this area. They came by covered wagon, herding their cattle; the boys taking turns walking behind them.
The family settled first at Duane, near Fosston, where Jane was postmistress. Three years later they moved to a small farm mostly woodland, in Lagarde township. They first had a log cabin for a home but as soon as possible they built a small frame house, which I am sure was crowded with five boys and five girls. According to stories told by them, it was a happy, lively home with many get-togethers and activities, a great deal of good natured humor, love and good food. One of the stories my Dad liked to tell about was when his older sisters had beaus call on them, he and his brothers would sit on the stairs and giggle and make strange noises.
James and his sons earned their living as woodsmen until they had enough farmland cleared. They had some interesting stories to tell about lumbering; hauling the logs out of the woods with horses and wagons or sleighs. They cut lumber for the Bliss sawmill, among others. My grandfather liked to tell USA about the wildcats and wolves that worried the lumbermen.
While living in Lagarde Township, the Hart family attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Beaulieu. I can remember as a child riding to church in the back of a truck as we did not have a working car. Other times we went in a buggy or sleigh. The family was active in community and township affairs. Mr. and Mrs. Hart were on the town board and the school board. They had many friends whom they visited and entertained. They liked to attend dances in the school house and barn raisings, etc. James and Jane had five boys and girls:

Ann lived in Warroad, MN. She had a daughter, Virginia Stubbs.17

Ann married Claude Blevins. They lived at Warroad, MN., where Claude
owned a grocery store. Ann had also been a seamstress before her
marriage. She was an
invalid for part of her life due to a heart condition following a
severe case of scarlet fever. They had one daughter, Virginia, who
now lives in Minneapolis. Ann and
Claude are both deceased.18

Notes:

Dorothy died in 1939. She married Raymond Hull from Chicago. He died
in 1978 in Menohman.17

Dorothy married Raymond Hull, June 20, 1929. They lived in Chicago.
Deone Marie was their only child. She married Bud Loyal and they now
live in Chicago. I
remember Aunt Dot as a very special person. When Grandma died she
came to live with USA and Aunt Dot and I shared a room. She was quite
a tease but always
willing to play games with me. I really admired my Aunt. I thought
her very pretty and well dressed. She was my Godmother and very
generous with her gifts at a time
when our family was financially hard-up.18

Mame Hart (the oldest sister) married Tom Burk. They lived in St.
Paul. She had a hairlip.17

Marie (Mamie) married Thomas Burke, a railroad conductor. They lived
in St. Paul, MN. Their children were Ray, Vivian, Mercedes, James,
Vera, and Cleo. James
spent a large part of his youth with his grandparents and his Uncle
Bert and attended school at the Hart School.18

Notes:

George Hart was the oldest. He had a daughter, Hazel of Wauben, MN.

------George Edward married Grace McIntosh. He was born Nov. 16 1882
and died Nov. 26, 1956 at Waubun. He farmed in Largarde township near
his father's farm
for many years, then moved to a farm east of Mahnomen. He retired
and lived at Waubun. Their children included Hazel Baker, Harold
(Bud), Durema Christianson,
Ronald, Gloria Granum, Mildred, Pat, Charles, Richard, Eugene and
Doris. George had four sons who served in World War II. Two of them
died in service. At present
only Hazel, Durema, Gloria and Mildred are living.18

Gertrude and Grandpa Hart were best buddies when they were young.
Gertrude Hart married Charlie Kelty in November of 1910. They had
three daughters, Rosamond, Mary Ann, and Corrine. Charlie ran a grain
elevator in northern
Minnesota, Forest City. Gert and Ann went to Seattle area for a time
and returned just prior to Gert and Charlie being married.17

Gertrude married Charles Kelty who was an elevator operator at
Waubun and Mahnomen. He later operated an elevator at Detroit Lakes.
The Keltys went to Portland,
Oregon in 1942 and remained there until Charles retired. At that
time they moved to Wadena, Minnesota and remained there until death.
Gert and Charlie had three girls:
Corrine Nelson, Rosamond, and Mary Ann Neitzke. Gert and Mamie were
milliners and seamstresses before their marriage and excelled in
their craft.18

Eventually Robert Hart and Mary Jane Chandonette lived in the home established by his father James in the Menohman area and started their family there. There is a small church and a cemetery in Beaulieu. Many of the Hart relatives
are buried there.

Robert Stephen (Bob) married Jane Chandonett and farmed east of Waubun for a number of years. They then moved to St. Paul where they lived the rest of their lives. Robert Stephen was born in December of 1888 and died in 1953 in St. Paul, MN. Jane was cook at St. Thomas College until shortly before her death. Their children included Donovan, Herbert, Bernice, Lucille, Helen, Ann Marie, Mary Jane, and Robert.

Bert worked as a woodsman and carpenter and after his marriage he
farmed and managed farms for A.J. Taylor.
In 1927 Bert and Josie moved to Bemidji where Bert owned and operated
a confectionary and restaurant. In 1932 the family returned to the
Waubun and Mahnomen areas. In 1941 they moved to Portland, OR where
work in the shipyards was available.

Elbert Hart married Jo. They had 8 children and moved to Portland
area years ago. Jim, Tom, and Bill live in Portland area. Peggy Hart
(daughter) married Paul Bisek -
they live on a farm in Menohman currently.17

Albert Patrick (Bert) born January 13, 1893, married Josephine
Swartz on October 17, 1917 in Stratford, Wisconsin. Josephine was a
teacher at the Espe school and
then at the Hart (Sunshine) School in Lagarde Township near Bert's
home. Bert worked as a woodsman and carpenter and, after his
marriage, he farmed and managed
farms for A.J. Taylor until 1927. Then he moved to Bemidji where he
owned and operated a confectionery and restaurant. In 1932 Bert and
family returned to the
Waubun and Mahnomen areas. In 1941 the family moved to Portland,
Ore. Bert worked in the shipyards and later, until his retirement, as
a janitor in an office building.
He died August 12, 1977 in Portland. Albert and Josie had five girls
and three boys: Patricia Bisek, Eldorn Johnson, Joanne Schuster,
James, Thomas, William,
Elizabeth Murray and Barbara Winczewski. All but Patricia, who
remained in Mahnomen, live in Portland, Oregon.18

Frank Hart married Hazel Hull, had two daughters - Delores Bruggeman
and Monna Honek. Both of Menohman area still. Hazel is still alive at
89. Frank and Dorothy's
children are double cousins because they each married a Hull.17

Francis (Frank) married Hazel Hull whose family were close
neighbors. Hazel taught at the Sunshine (Hart) School for many years.
Frank and Hazel lived on the
original Hart homestead for many years. They had two daughters:
Delores (Mrs. Art Bruggeman) of Mahnomen and Mona (Mrs. John Honek)
of Moorhead. Hazel Hart
lives at Valley View Apartments in Mahnomen. Frank died in Mahnomen
on November 12, 1984. He was born on November 27, 1894.18

Gerald Hart farmed with Frank in Menohman.17

Gerald J. Hart, youngest son served in France and Germany in World
War I. He never married. After his mother died, Gerald lived with his
brother, Bert, for a number
of years. He then lived on the farm with Frank until World War II,
when he went to work in the shipyards in Portland, Oregon. Gerald
died in Oregon on January 8,
1966. He was born November 11, 1895. I remember my Uncle as a very
warm, kind man and very handsome. Gerald was a talented man and well
educated person. He
could play the piano, banjo and violin. He read continuously. He was
a garden enthusiast and experimented with many kinds of plants and
gardening methods.18

Agnes Hart died at the age of 19.

Agnes died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-one.

Saint Cloud Daily Times, Sept. 10, 1968, P. 6:1. Edward P. Hart, 74, 1726 First St. S., a retired conductor for the Great Northern Railroad Co., died Monday. He was born in Villard MN and moved to Melrose in 1910. He married Rose Pung in Melrose in 1918. He is survived by his widow; two brothers, Marvin, St. Paul and John, Minneapolis; and a sister, Mrs. Mary Wing, Chula Vista CA. He was preceded in death by a son Laverne in 1944 in July during World War I, his parents and a sister. He was employed by the Great Northern Railroad Co. for 50 years, retiring April 1960. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, Railroad Veteran's Assn., Fraternal Order of Eagles and Senior Citizens. Funeral service are at 11 a.m. Thursday for St. Mary's Cathedral with burial in Assumption Cemetery. Friends may call at the Daniel Funeral home after 2 p.m. Wednesday until time of funeral. St. Mary's Cathedral parish will say the prayers for the dead at 8 p.m. Wednesday."
