Perche stone masons were highly regarded experts in stone masonry and 328 Percherons were recruited, including Louis and his future father-in-law Marin Boucher, a skilled mason who arrived in 1633. Nearly all French Canadians have some ancestors from the villages of Perche.

It is unknown under what terms Louis came to the colony, no contract having been found for him in France. whether he came under contract to Noël Juchereau, Sieur des Chatelets, or as a free migrant. When Juchereau died in 1648, his sister took inventory of his estate, and the inventory list of October 7, 1649 showed Louis Houde as a servant.

Today, there is an inn and a restaurant at 2287 Chemin Royal, Ste-Famille, Île d'Orléans. From the parking lot or from the terrace you can see the village of Château-Richer where the couple got married. On the site of La Maison de nos Aïeux, a museum dedicated to the founding families of Île d'Orléans, there are two indications that Louis Houde was present between 1658 and 1682; a sculpture for the families and a plaque in the park adjacent to the museum.
Five years later, on February 2, 1660, Louis Houde received the sacrament of confirmation from Mgr [[Laval-89|François de Laval]] in Château-Richer.
Louis and his wife lived in Ste-Famille for 24 years and had 13 of their 14 children there. They were listed here in the 1666, 1667 and 1681 censuses.

On April 13, Louis brother-in-law, Jean Plante, made a transaction with Louis by agreeing to pay him 300 livres for Louis' wife's share of the inheritance. By 1682, the family of eleven married sons had outgrown the capability of the land at Sainte-Famille to support them. The Houde family decided to leave for a newer and larger estate where they could find land for each of their sons and remain together, cultivate the soil, and fish for eels.
Louis and Madeleine were granted a large property in the seigneury held by the Ursuline nuns of Quebec in Sainte-Croix,[[http://www.ville-sainte-croix.ca/histoire-de-sainte-croix/ Histoire la ville de Sainte-Croix]] where the sons could each have their own lots around the paternal house. The notary Romain Becquet drew up the deed on February 13, 1682. They received a concession of 9 arpents of frontage by 40 of depth (This strip of land extends for a little less than 15 km along the river and today represents part of the urban and rural municipality of Ste-Croix). They brought with them to Ste-Croix probably 10 children, Françoise and Marie-Anne having died at a young age and Marie-Angélique not having been born yet.
They sold their Isle d'Orléans land on November 9, 1685 to Abbé François Lamy. This was confirmed by a signed receipt on July 27, 1686.
On March 16, 1682 Louis Houde and Marie Madeleine Boucher gave their son Jean an arpent of their land:[https://www.sgq.qc.ca/client_file/upload/L-Ancetre/Les-premieres-annees/V26-N09-10.pdf]:[Translation] By this act, the latter renounces the succession of his father and mother. / Le 16 mar 1682 (Vachon) donation de Louis Houde et Marie Madeleine Boucher à leur fils jean d'un arpent de leur terre. Par cet acte, celui-ci renonce à la succession de ses père et mère.
Shortly after their arrival on Sainte-Croix, the Ursulines granted new lands to the children of Louis and Madeleine. And on June 19, 1685 (Rageot), Louis the elder son received a concession from the Ursulines of Quebec joining that of Gervais, his brother. Louis was 22 years old and Gervais 20. Louis the eldest had just gotten married 4 days before. All the living children of Louis and Madeleine were settled near the original Houde concession in Ste-Croix

The inhabitants of Ste-Croix primarily relied on agriculture for their livelihoods. They cultivated crops such as wheat, corn, and vegetables, which provided sustenance for the community. The fertile soil and favorable climate of the region allowed for successful farming. Additionally, the settlement was situated near the St Lawrence River, enabling the residents to engage in fishing and trade.
In 1694 Louis donated a portion of his land to have the first Catholic church built in Ste-Croix in 1694. Until then, the mass had been at his home. In return, he received a lifetime pew from Msgr de Laval.
On October 29, 1709, Louis Houde and Madeleine Boucher took an inventory of their property (there is a notarized copy). He died sometime during the year 1712, at age 96. The registries of Sainte-Croix were destroyed for this era, and no document verifies the exact date of his death or for his wife Madeleine, who died in 1709 in Ste-Croix at the age of 68.
His testament was done on 23 March 1710. His succession was initially contested in July and August 1712.[Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec. Louis Houde is the ancestor of all the Houde and Houle of French America, of the Clair-Leclair and part of the Leclerc of Quebec. All of Louis Houde's surviving children married and had offspring, which greatly contributed to the population growth of the Lotbinière region. Thus, a commemorative plaque can be found on the façade of the church of Ste-Croix.
