:: :: Les Arseneau [4/95]: Pierre ARSONNEAU of Louiseville married as his first wife, by contract at Maskinonge before notary Antoine PUYPEROUX aka DelaFosse, 12 Jan 1739 Marie-Anne LUPIEN, age 19, daughter of Jacques and Genevieve BRUNO. For the bride: Jean-Baptiste FLEURY and Dame Marie _______, her grandparents?, Bastien VANASSE, her uncle, Suzanne LUPIEN, her aunt, Joseph LUPIEN, her paternal uncle, her brothers Joseph and Jacques LUPIEN, and sisters Genevieve and Madeleine. Present were: Jacques LEMOYNE, Esquire, Sieur de Martigny, Seigneur de Laviolette; Jean-Francois BARIL dit Ducheny, wholesale merchant; Pierre-Francois DUFOUR, Esquire, Sieur de Villezeau. Others who signed were Pierre ARSENEAUL, Marie-Anne LUPIEN, Genevieve SICAR, Angelique MARTIGNY, Charlotte MARTIGNY, Agathe SICAR, 2 illegible.
:: :: Pierre married 2nd by contract 31 Aug 1744 Marie-Jossette BRISARD before notary Joseph CARON and deposited by him 25 Nov the same year. This contract is listed in the repertory of this notary but the document is missing at the Judicial Archives of the District of Trois-Rivieres. Witnesses: Father DECOTEAU, Joseph GAUTIER, Augustin PARANTEAU, Francois PAILL
:: :: Pierre-Paul ARSENAUT's third marriage was also by contract 8 May 1750 at Maskinonge, deposited 6 Jun same year in the greffe of notary of Pierre-Francois RIGAUD. Witnesses to the contract were the bride's father, her brother Pierre-Alexis GIGNARD, 2nd Captain of Militia for the parish, Sieur BERGERON, Captain of Militia for the parish, and Augustin CARPENTIER. The contract recites that she brings 1 cow and her calf, 1 hog, 2 sheep, 1 bed,3 sheets, 1 quilt, "head linen", 5 short cloaks, 6 hats, cloak with hood, 1 robe, 1 tablecloth and 4 napkins, stockings & shoes, corset, neckerchief and some linen cloth for a total value of 356 livres and 50 sols.
:: :: Before notary Hyacinthe-Olivier PRESSE on 7 Jan 1737, the Ursuline nuns of Trois-Rivieres ceded a grant of land to their miller, Pierre ARSENAUX, which became involved in the following litigation: On 1 May 1706 Michel TROTTIER, Sieur Beaubien, Seigneur of Riviere-du-Loup (Louiseville), granted to Jean-Francois GOSSAIN dit Saint-Germain all the front land located between the late LABRETONNIER and SAINT-AMANT, Sr. in depth to the seigneury of the Dame of GRANPRE. TROTTIER sold this seigneury:: 3 Mar 1723, including the above land, to the Ursuline nuns of Trois-Rivieres. A written and detailed declaration was taken 22 Apr 1725 by Pierre PAULIN, the legal representative for the nuns. Jean-Francois GOSSAIN dit Brisard dit Saint-Germain died and was buried at Louiseville 19 Feb 1728. His widow remarried and removed in 1730 to St-Michel of Yamaska. On 20 Jul 1734 the Intendant (highest civil officer of a colony, his actions carried the authority of royal sanction) accorded the widow of GOSSAIN, and her children, a delay of one year to "hold fire" on this land. Not complying with the ordinance, the land reverted on 28 Dec 1735 to the Ursulines with permission to concede itto other habitants. Yet, in the year 1736, the widow gave the land "valued about 2,000 livres" to Francois LEMAITRE dit Duhaime to seed for a year on condition he fence it at his own expense and pay the rents for that time. The "cens and rentes" were also paid. The following January (7 Jan 1737) the Ursulines, before the aforesaid notary PRESSE, conceded anew this parcel to Pierre ARSENAUX "their miller", charging him to pay the heirs of Saint-Germain, 200 livres in consideration of the attention and the zeal which said Religious wish to render said heirs to not deprive them of the work and care which Jean GOSSAIN had done by clearing part of said grant. This same year the GOSSAIN children set about improving this re-assigned parcel and were opposed by the new owner. The widow petitioned Intendant Gilles HOCQUART, but the Ursulines replied that she had abandoned it eight years earlier. Therefore, the request of the widow was dismissed for non-suit by judgement rendered at Quebec 23 Jan 1738.
:: :: In 1734, there were 118 mills. As there were several mills on some seigneuries, not more than 1/3 of all seigneuries, conceded for agricultural development, had mills in 1734.
:: :: The colony was divided, for administrative purposes, into three governments: Montreal, Trois-Rivieres and Quebec. Population growth was spotty in the Government of Trois-Rivieres, which in 1737 had just been connected by road with Montreal andQuebec (Riviere-du-Loup, the present Louiseville, was in the Govt. of Trois-Rivieres). Thereafter the habitant was less isolated from the two principal towns.
:: :: The final capitulation of New France to the British took place at Montreal when Governor Pierre-Francois VAUDREUIL signed on 8 Sep 1760. In the same month and year, a census was taken of the City and Government of Trois-Rivieres.In the parish of Riviere-du-Loup, "ARCENAUX" has 1 house, a wife, 4 male and 3 female children, no domestics. Only ten persons in the parish were permitted to have guns, these were for hunting, as of 4 Jul 1761.
:: :: In 1763, post offices at Montreal, Trois-Rivieres and Quebec were placed under the charge of Hugh FINLAY. A carriage road along the north shore of the St-Laurent connected the three towns. Post houses were set up at intervals ofabout nine miles and placed in charge of habitants. The system in Canada was connected with that of other Colonies by a courier service between Montreal and New York. In 1765 the rate on a single letter passing between Montrealand Quebec was eight pence and between either of these places and Trois-Rivieres, six pence. Envelopes were not in general use in Canada until after 1850. In 1851 the use of postage stamps was introduced. Before this, the receiver of letters had paid the charges of transportation. The Quebec Gazette of 31 Jan 1765: "A list of letters which have been returned into this office from the commencement to the fifth day of January 1765. Letter unclaimed by Monsieur ARSENAULT of Riviere-du-Loup". This may allude to Pierre-Paul (1708-1785) or one of his sons.
:: :: "A colonist who was able at least to sign his own name had climbed a rung of a social ladder in the parish hierarchy". (Daily Life in Early Canada 1967 p.101) Our ancestor had signed his name on several documents, so we can assume that he was one of the ones who "climbed a rung of a social ladder".
