'''Frenchtown, War of 1812''' [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Frenchtown Wikipedia Battle of Frenchtown] On 18 Jan 1813 American troops, together with about 100 local French militia, recaptured Frenchtown. This would not last long, and on 22 Jan 1813 British troops from Fort Malden arrived and after many losses the Americans surrendered. The British returned to Fort Malden the same day with all the prisoners, army and civilian, who were able to walk. The following day the injured who had remained in Frenchtown were all killed by the Potawatomi allies of the British, and the houses in which they were sheltered were burned. This was known as the Battle of Frenchtown ( aka the Battle of River Raisin, aka the River Raisin Massacre ), and the American losses at this battle were the highest of any battle in the War of 1812.
On 27 Dec 1816 some of the citizens of Monroe County filed an application to the US Congress for relief due to the destruction caused by the War of 1812. ''On his Emigration to the US''
There is an unsourced family history which states that Peter (Brancheau), his son Peter, and his daughter Veronique with her husband Francois Leroux left Châteauguay in 1798 and arrived at a point of land near Cornwall, Ontario Canada which they named Messena (New York) in September of 1798. After a short period there, they moved on again arriving in Monroe County Michigan in an area later to be called Frenchtown/Newport in the summer of 1800.
Daughter Veronique and her husband Francois did not leave Châteauguay until some time between January of 1806 when their son Ignace was born in Châteauguay,[ “Quebec, Canada, Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1968”, [online database with images], Ancestry.com, {{ Ancestry Sharing | 25011558 | 7b22746f6b656e223a22697a4e795a4b334b355a50534e48714d6863717479514b6c346d335774445850664d4467644a51754278513d222c22746f6b656e5f76657273696f6e223a225632227d }} - ( {{ Ancestry Record | 1091 | 7197968 }} : accessed 23 Oct 2024 ), Ignace ??Our baptism 6 Jan 1806 St-Joachim Châteauguay, citing Gabriel Drouin, comp. As for the father and son Pierre’s, there is no evidence that they ever lived in or near St-Régis, but the younger Pierre was married in 1808 at Ste-Anne’s in Detroit and the record states that he was residing at the parish of St-Antoine in Frenchtown (Riviére aux Raisins).[” U.S., French Catholic Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1695-1954”, [online database with images], Ancestry.com, {{ Ancestry Sharing | 25013853 | 7b22746f6b656e223a22522b4575674371353266787656755634362f56796a744a4a6869655076513639535a4a2f39726f514a61593d222c22746f6b656e5f76657273696f6e223a225632227d }} - ( {{ Ancestry Record | 1111 | 48561 }} : accessed 24 Oct 2024 ), Pierre Branchaux marriage 2 Feb 1808 Ste-Annes in Detroit, citing Gabriel Drouin, comp. Montreal, Quebec, Canada: Institut Généalogique Drouin.] The elder Pierre had a daughter in 1808 at the Foot of the Rapids of the Maumee River in Ohio, who was baptized in 1810 at l’Assomption in Sandwich Ontario. Both of the Pierre’s also obtained a land grant in 1811 to side-by-side lots in Monroe County. Additional support of the 1798 departure is in the marriage records of sons Charles and Francois (1795 and 1797) where Pierre was a witness at both of the marriages, and in the marriages of children Veronique and Jean Baptiste (1798 and 1801) where neither Pierre was present as a witness. Please see sources for these marriages above.
''On His Second Marriage to Marie Ouellette''
[[ Ouellet-720 | Marie Ouellette]] was married on 20 Aug 1787 to Jean Baptiste Brugiere and together they had at least four children, born from 1789 to 1795. Then, after a gap of about 7 years, Marie had a daughter named Marie. Marie was born on 9 Aug 1802 and baptized on 10 Aug 1802, but her husband Jean Baptiste did not acknowledge that the baby girl was his. The record states “baptisée Marie née d’hier de Marie Ouelette, femme de J Baptiste Bougiere”. Baby Marie would die shortly after on 9 Sep 1802. It is possible that Pierre was the father of this child, but supporting evidence for this has not been found.
Pierre and Marie Ouellette had a son Joseph born in 1806. No original documents of his birth or baptism have been located, but is recorded in Denissen. Denissen appears to have had access to the St-Antoine baptismal registers, so it is possible that Joseph was baptized there.
Then on 1 Jun 1810 at L’Assomption in Sandwich, a daughter Therese was baptized which was originally recorded as “Le premier de Juine mil huit cent dix par nous prêtre soussigné a été baptisée sous condition Therese née le vingt et un de ce mois en mil huit cent huit au pied des rapide de Myr(??) diocese de Baltimore, de Pierre Brancheau et de Marie Ouellette [femme de Jean Baptiste Bruge -unreadable- ] Antoine Belleperche et la marraine Therese Lesperance qui ont declaré ne savoir signer”. Later, the text in the brackets was crossed out, and a note was added in the margin which reads “Maries par Mr Anderson Magistrate du Etats Unis (unreadable)”.
This all was an issue for the Catholic priests as Marie’s first husband Jean Baptiste was still living, and the Church at that time (and still today) does not recognize any remarriages when the other spouse is still living unless an annulment was granted, which almost certainly was not the case in the early 1800’s. As they could not marry in the Church, Pierre and Marie’s marriage would then of necessity have been a civil ceremony.
The ‘Pied des Rapide” mentioned in the record is located on the Maumee River in Ohio, where British Fort Miami was built in 1794 and US Fort Meigs was built in 1813. At the time most travel was done on the water ways and on the Great Lakes, but some rudimentary trails did exist and they all met at the Foot of the Rapids where the Maumee could safely be crossed. The first known French settlement there was a trading post established by Gabriel Godfrey and Jean Baptiste Beaugrand in 1790, and several French families from Monroe settled there shortly afterwards. Then in 1806 Col John Anderson (the same “Mr Anderson” mentioned in the record above) was living near Fort Miami and working as a trader and a farmer. So Pierre and Marie, as well as John Anderson, can all be located at the “Foot of the Rapids” at the time of the birth of daughter Therese in 1808.[ Nevin O. Winter Litt. D, A. History of Northwestern OhioA Narrative of Its Historical Progress and Development from the First European Exploration of the Maumee and Sandusky Valleys and the Adjacent Shores of Lake Erie, down to the Present Time, (The Lewis Publishing Company : Chicago and New York, 1917), Vol 1, p 476. [https://www.ohiogenealogyexpress.com/lucas/lucasco_1917_hist_contents.htm Link] ] John Anderson was appointed a judge in the newly created Michigan Territory on 8 May 1807, so Pierre and Marie’s marriage would have occurred at some time between May 1807 and 1810.[ Talcott Enoch Wing, History of Monroe County Michigan 1819-1890,(Munsell & Co : New York, 1890), p 266. ''Questionable Record in the Original Profile''
This source is from Ancestry, and it states that Pierre was living in Monroe County in 1820 at the age of 20. However, no such entry is found in the 1820 census. Portions of these records for Monroe County are extremely difficult to read (on both Ancestry and FamilySearch), and the reference may be to an entry there. As Pierre did not request government relieve from the effects of the War of 1812, he may have given his land to his son Pierre, but no person of Pierre’s age is listed with the younger Pierre’s family. According to the Michigan Census of 1827-1870, he resided in Michigan in 1820 at the age of 72.
