| Notes |
- Oliba de Cerdanya (later Oliba II "Cabreta" Comte de Cerdanya i Besalú) was born in about 920 and was the thirdson of Miró(n) II, Comte de Cerdanya, Besalú, Conflent i Berga and his wife Ava (see note in father's profile regarding potential parents of Ava). [1] [2] [3]
The County of Cerdanya was a predominantly Basque region under nominal control of the Moors since 731. The nearby County of Besalú was reconquered from the Moors by 785.
Siblings and Accession of Elder Brothers
His parents Mirón and Ava had four children together: [1]
Seniofredo
Guifré
Oliba
Miró(n)
Mirón also had five children with a mistress named Vigilia, including Gotruda, who married Lope I, Comte de Pallars. [1]
His father, Miró(n) II Comte de Cerdanya i Besalú, died in 927 - when Oliba was only a child. Miró's eldest sons Seniofredo (Sunifred) and Guifré succeeded their father jointly as Comte de Cerdanya, Besalú, Conflent i Berga. [1] [3] [2]
Marriage, Family and Accession
Oliba's married Ermengarde, who may have been the daughter of Count Gausbert of Empúries. [3]
Ermengard and Oliba had six children, and Oliba also fathered a child with a mistress. [1]
Oliba eventually succeeded both of his elder brothers, becoming Comte de Cerdanya i Besalú. [1] [3]
Travels to Italy and Succession
In 968, Oliba travelled to Rome with an Abbott - and he made a second journey to Italy by 988, to the monastery of Monte Cassino north of Rome, where spent his remaining days - abdicating his titles in Spain to his sons. He died at Monte Cassino in 988. [3]
His eldest son, who succeeded to Besalú and Ripoli, was Bernat I "Tallaferro" Comte de Besalú i Ripoli. [1] [4] [5]
His second son, who succeeded to Cerdanya and Berga, was Guifré, Comte de Cerdanya i Berga. [1] [3]
