== Biography == Pierre BERGERON, son of uncertain parents [[Bergeron-390|Pierre Bergeron]] and [[Commercial-1|Catherine Commercial]], was born around 1606 in St-Saturnin-du-Bois, Bishopric of La Rochelle, Charente-Maritime.
Before 1640, in France, he married Catherine MARCHAND, likely in St-Saturnin-du-Bois, Aunis (Charente-Maritime) 17394, France where the couple's five known children were born (See Research Note #1).
Children:

Pierre migrated to New France in 1665, with his son André, and possibly his wife. (see Research Notes)
In 1666, both are recorded at Eustache LAMBERT in Basse-Ville de Québec:: '"Eustache Lambert, 48, merchant; Marie Laurence, 34 , his wife; Gabriel, 8; Eustache, 7; Marie, 4; Jean Adam, 22, engaged carpenter; Thomas Lefebvre, 24, ''Pierre Bergereau, 60, André Bergereau, 23''', and Gabriel Boyferon, 23, '''engaged'; André Robidou, 26, employee." In 1667, father and son meet on the Côte-de-Lauzon: ''"At the farm of Sieur Lambert; '''servants: Fierre (Pierre) Bergeron, 78 (sic!); André Bergeron, 22'''; Gabriel, 20; Abraham, 26; Etienne, 22." Pierre Bergeron's death record has not been found. His son Andre is on the 1681 Census, Pierre's name is not. Given the age (75) Pierre's would have been at the time of the census, and that he appeared on the 1666 and 1667 censuses aside Andre, it is likely that he died in Lauzon (seigneurie) before the 1681 census as propsoed by Jetté.[[https://fr.wikisource.org/wiki/Histoire_des_Canadiens-fran%C3%A7ais,_Tome_V/Chapitre_4 Recensement 1681 - Benjamin Sulte+Histoire des Canadiens-français, Tome V]][[https://www.genealogiequebec.com/membership/voir.aspx?id=H%3a%2fCollections+diverses%2f19+-+Dictionnaire+Jett%c3%a9%2fDictionnaire+g%c3%a9n%c3%a9alogique+des+familles+du+Qu%c3%a9bec%2fB%2fBe%2fLe+Dictionnaire+Jett%c3%a9+Page+0086.jpg Dictionnaire généalogique des familles du Québec des origines à 1730, René Jetté, avec la collaboration du PRDH, 1983, Presses de l'Université de Montréal, pg 86 (Bergeron) (membership IGD)]]
=== Bergeron Family Name Origin ===
The Bergeron family is one of ancient French origin. In the 10th century when surnames started to form, the name Berger was given to those caring for lambs, ewes, and sheep. Bergeron means "little shepherd".
=== Bergeron Coat-of-Arms ===
The family bears the coat-of-arms; Gules au chevron d'or acc. de trois croisettes d'argent. The family seat is at Toulouse, France per an entry in the Genealogical and Family History of Maine. Vol. 2.
=== Pierre Bergeron History ===
Pierre and four of his sons arrived in Quebec around 1665. Catherine died around the same time or earlier. Pierre was most likely recruited by a merchant named Eustache Lambert who frequently traveled to La Rochelle from Canada. Eustache had accompanied the Jesuits in their missions to the West from 1645 to 1647. He owned land in Lauzon, Quebec and was one of the earliest settlers there. Pierre and his sons were hired by Eustache in 1666 in Quebec City and lived on Eustache's farm called the Housing of St. Mary located on the coast of Lauzon in 1667 per census records. Pierre and Andre obtained a grant of eight acres between Eustache Lambert and John Carpenter's land on December 10, 1670. Pierre dies before 1681 in Lauzon, just before the census.
==Research Notes==# There is confusion on the number of children Pierre and Catherine had. It appears to come from the 1666 census that lists Pierre Bergereau, 60, André Bergereau, 23' and two others, Gabriel Boyferon, 23, '''engagés'''; André Robidou, 26, matelot."'' # It remains uncertan if Pierre's spouse [[Marchand-113|Catherine Marchand (abt.1620-bef.1665)]] migrated to New France. Archiv Histo reports he arrived as "Engagé comme domestique d'Eustache Lambert" et "Épouse et enfants". Catherin may have boarded the ship and not survived the journey, or died very soon after her arrivial. To date, (jan 26, 2025), no record, other than Archo Histo, of Catherine's presence in New France has been found.
# Links to the children's baptism records are on their profiles.# There may be conflication in Pierre's parents, possibly due to French-to-English translation (Marchand vs Commercial). Trying to sort it. # Pierre' son, Andre, recieved a Land Grant in Lauzon on 19 août 1679 [[https://numerique.banq.qc.ca/patrimoine/archives/52327/3412051 1679 Procès-verbal de chaînage], BAnQ Québec, Fonds Cour supérieure.
