He was son of Ferdinand Jacquet and of Dorothée Cona, of the city of Liège, in what was then the principality of Liège. 1681 census record give his birth as being around 1643, although one site states that his father died in 1636.

{{Carignan-Salières Regiment}}Jean Jacquet de Gerlaisse dit St-Amant was a soldier in the ''La Fouille'' company of the Carignan-Salières regiment, arriving in Québec city with the troops on 12 September 1665.

=== Marriage ===[[De Gerlaisse-3|Jean Jacquet de Gerlaisse]] entered int a marriage contract with Jeanne Trudelle on 12 September 1667 before notary Claude Auber. The actual marriage record is lost. (see notes).
The couple were established in the seigneurie de Manereuil at Rivière-du-Loup, (which will become Louiseville later).

      9 known children (listed above).

For some reason, only he is listed on 1681 census

------------------'''Note''': Jean François ''Charles'' son fils/his son, the baptism record names his father ''Jaquet Charles'' and mother Jeanne Trudelle, it is possible that the priest misheard, Charles and Jarles sounding very similar.
'''Note''': Tanguay fait deux personnages de cet individu. Le premier en Jean Jacquet, et le deuxième en Jean Degerlais. Les actes d'origine prouvent qu'il s'agit bien du même homme appelé Jean JACQUET de Gerlaisse. Nom qu'il signe sous son contrat de mariage.
'''Note''': Marriage contract before Notary Claude Auber, the actual marriage record is lost. Although Jeanne Trudel was only 11, and therefore below the legal cannon-law age to marry, they might have received a dispensation for them to marry. Only the actual marriage record would show if such was the case. Or the marriage might have taken place at a later date than the contract, the known children only appear from about 1673 onwards.

'''Name - Variations - de nom:''':Il est aussi connu sous le nom de Jean Saint-Amand, Jean Jacques Desjarlais, Jean Jacques de Gerlais, Jean Jacques De Gerlaise, Jean Jacquet, Jean Jacquet dit Saint-Amand, Jean De Gerlaise dit Saint-Amand, Jean Segerles dit Saint-Amand et Jean Degerlais dit Saint-Amand.

'''Research data from the web on his father'''
Because his son called himself Jean JACQUET de GERLAISSE, many presumed that it was the case for his father too - but no. Through a visit at the Spanish Royal Archives in Madrid, and help from genealogists in Belgium, I have been able to trace Ferdinand JACQUET who was an archer to the kings of Spain, Philip III, then Philip IV, the latter granting him nobility in February 1628. I have posted the letters that are written in French on my tree in Geneanet. Ferdinand died in August 1636 on a battlefield in the north of France, which means that Jean was an orphan at a young age (and cannot have been born in 1643 as the census suggest - his age at death suggests he was born in 1628). The surname De GERLAISSE he must have added because of a connection to that family, who potentially raised him. I have not been able to find the whereabouts of his mother Dorothée CONA. They obviously lived close to what is now the Belgium/France border, in an area that changed hands many times during the XVIIth century wars - in those days the Principauté de Liège and Duché de Bourgogne. It explains why Jean came to la Nouvelle-France as part of the Régiment de Carignan, under the king of France. His nobility was not recognized, but he was obviously wealthy because the "douaire prefix" in the marriage contract was five thousand pounds - ten times the average for soldiers and ten times the "dot" given by the parents of the bride. (In English both dot and douaire are translated as "dowry")In the letters of enoblement, it is said that not only Ferdinand, but his father and grandfather had served the kings of the House of Habsbourg before him. His father fought for Don Juan of Austria and died in battle. His grandfather was a preceptor for the "pages" of Charles Quint(V).[https://www.ancestry.com/boards/localities.weurope.belgium.liege/234/mb.ashx Ancestry board from 2013] ('''Note''': Livres, not Pounds, different currency and value; ''Dot'' is Dowry, ''Douaire'' is Dower, not quite the same word, dowry is brought to a marriage, dower is what a widow is entitled to.)
