| Notes |
- Pierre de Poitou (later Guillaume VII "Acerrimus / Aigret" duc d'Aquitaine) was born in about 1023 and was the son of Guillaume V duc d'Aquitaine and his third wife Agnes Bourgogne de Mâcon. [1]
In 1039, Pierre succeeded his elder step-brother Guillaume VI "Pinguis / le Gros" d'Aquitaine, changing his first name to match that of his ducal predecessors to become Guillaume VII duc d'Aquitaine. [1]
In 1051, Guillaume married his wife whose name was Ermesinde. [1] Relationships and the inheritance of estates suggest that his wife Ermesinde may have been Ermesinde de Longwy (see below).
Two daughters have been indicated as children of Guillaume and his wife Ermesinde. The first is Agnes de Poitou (abt 1052 - aft 18 Jun 1089), who is the presumed wife of Pierre I Comte de Savoie. [1]
In addition, relationships reported and the inheritance of estates suggest that Ermesinde de Poitou, the first wife of Conrad I Comte de Luxembourg - who was the Comtesse of Longwy as well as Luxembourg - is considered to have been a granddaughter of Guillaume V duc d'Aquitaine. Some have suggested that she was the daughter of Guillaume's younger brother (Guillaume VIII) but she was more likely a daughter of Guillaume VII and his wife Ermesinde. Her mother being Ermesinde de Longwy as the heiress of Longwy would account for Ermesinde de Poitou being noted as the Comtesse de Longwy in early accounts related to her children with Conrad I Comte de Luxembourg - and with the inheritance of estates by their daughters. (see Research Notes related to Ermesinde de Poitou).
Guillaume VII duc d'Aquitaine died in 1058 and was buried at the Priory of Saint-Nicolas in Poitiers. He was succeeded by his younger brother Guy Geoffroi de Poitou - who likewise changed his first name to match that of the family's ducal ancestors, to become Guillaume VIII duc d'Aquitaine. [1]
