- Erc of Dalriada
Erc Derg was born in the kingdom of Leinster, Ireland [1]
Erc of Dalriada ruled the Irish Gaelic kingdom of Dalriada. His parents are said to have been Eochaid Muinremuir and Erca, a daughter of Loarn mac Eirc. [2]
Erc of Dalriada passed away in 474.
He was the father of three sons who went to Alba (present day Scotland) and re-established control of the Dal Riata. These three children were Fergus Mór, Loarn, and Aengus. [2][3]
From an old poem, the Duan Albanach [4]
The three sons of Erc son of Eochaidh, the valiant,
Three who obtained the blessing of Patrick,
Took Alban, exalted their courage,
Loarn, Feargus and Aongus.
Other sources cite a total of 12 sons. These six went to conquer Alba: Lorn beg, Lorn mor, Macmisi beg, Macmisi mor, Fergus beg, and Fergus mor. The other sons were Macdeicill Angus, Alban, Enna, Bresal, Fiachra, and Dubthach.[5]
It is during his reign that Scottish Dalriada began to split from the Irish side. Up until that time Dalriada consisted of two halves: the area that is now County Antrim in Ireland, and what was called Scotia Minor, now Argyll, in Scotland. The name "Argyll" means "coastline of the Gaels".
Erc was the progenitor of the kings of Dalriada, starting with his three sons. Succession followed the Irish law of Tanistry, which would often result in alternating succession from different branches from the same family. [6]
