    Notes

      Biography
Ragnvald "Heidumhære" (highly honored/revered or famous) was a Norwegian legendary king or chief in Vestfold at the end of the ninth century. The birth year is added in accordance with the one (currently) listed in Norwegian Wikipedia for Ragnvald Heidumhære.

MedLands mentions that he in The Ynglinga Saga is called "Rognvald Mountain-high", son of Olaf whom he succeeded as king of Vestfold. That would most likely be some mistake in translation. [2]

According to legend, Ragnvald Heidumhære was the son of Olav Geirstadalv/Geirstad-Alf Gudrødsson.. Ragnvald was possibly the father of a daughter who married Øystein Glumra, father of Ragnvald Mørejarl.

In Ynglingatal, Ragnvald is mentioned as "Vognstyreren", and wagons had a cultic function in the Norse religion, and may be a hint that Ragnvald functioned as a good (priest) in Vestfold. Ynglingatal, composed by Ragnvalds skald "Tjodolv den kvinværske" seems to have been composed as proof that Ragnvald Heidumhære had as great a right to the royal power as Harald Hårfagre.

A dubious, later pedigree[citation needed] attributes to Ragnvald a daughter, Åsa Ragnvaldsdatter (Aseda Rognvaldsdatter), who married Eystein Ivarsson. It is through this line that Ragnvald Heidumhære is a purported ancestor of William the Conqueror (and subsequent British royal houses).

      Ynglingasaga
Rognvald Olafsson, the Mountain High, son of Olaf Gudrodsson. His mother is not named in Ynglinga Saga. King of Westfold after his father. He is the subject of the Ynglinga-tal composed by Thjodolf of Kvine, a poetic catalogue of the dynasty, probably composed between 880 and 900 AD. [3][4] He is the last King named in the Ynglingasaga which says he was very tall and a good seaman.

      Research Notes
Hrolfr nefja was connected to him as a son. There are no sources supporting such a relationship; it was probably caused by some form of conflation somewhere. Østenstad-1 14:59, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
