    Notes
    • The fact that Gerulf was the ancestor of the later Counts of Holland has been overlooked for centuries. The oldest genealogical overview of Holland, the Rijmkroniek (drafted around 1125-1133), begins with Dirk, the first count of Holland. It does mention that Dirk I had a brother Waldger, but does not say that there was also a father or a forerunner. The Rijmkroniek of Holland from the thirteenth century suggests that Gerulf may have died without a child.
From the seventeenth century, in Regino of Prüm, the designation of Gerulf as 'comites Fresonum' (Count of Frisia) was a clue that he should have been Dirk I's father. Only after the end of the nineteenth century, Bolhuis van Zeeburgh provided good support for that father-son relationship: Regino had also reported that Waldger was Gerulf's son, while in the Gravenregister it was read that Dirk and Waldger were brothers . In addition, both Gerulf and Dirk were greeted in West Frisia. [1]Children:

(Gerulf, 0889 mentioned as Count, father of Dirk I and Waldger) [2]

      Also called Gerolf of Holland.
Wikipedia: His ancestry is unclear, but he may have been a son or, more likely, a grandson of the earlier Gerolf, who was a count in the area of Frisia at the time of the reign of Emperor Louis I the Pious (fl. 833) and who later joined a monastery. The earlier Gerolf died in 855. There is some limited and vague evidence that this earlier Gerolf was a son of a certain Theodoric, who in turn supposedly descended from the Frisian king Redbad (d. 719).
