===Birth===Placing Michel’s birth in 1595 is an estimate based on known information about his siblings. One of his brothers was married in 1612, suggesting a birth about 1590 for him; the youngest sibling was baptized in 1610. As Michel’s birth predates the 1602 opening of the records for Saint-Victor parish, his baptism could safely be placed in the first decade of his parent’s marriage. The year 1595 -plus or minus 5 years seems an intelligent guess.

===Marriages and children===The fille du roi Marie Grandin noted her place of origin as Saint-Euverte parish of Orléans (in Tanguay’s dictionary mistakenly called Saint-Aubert, image 2 of this profile), and gave her mother’s name as Marie Lejeune. No records for Marie Grandin’s baptism or her parents’ marriage have yet been found. Her birth circa 1651 to a father born circa 1595 seems at first suspect, however there are indications that Michel had probably been married twice before his union with Marie Lejeune. If that were the case, their marriage would have to be placed later than September 1649.
While the Grandin family’s home parish appears to have been Saint-Victor, Michel, father of Marie, is found in the records of both that parish and Saint-Euverte as well. In fact Michel was first married in 1626 to Catherine Surger at Saint-Euverte. Neither his parents or any other relative was mentioned in the record, however there is supporting evidence to identify him-

#-he had obtained permission of the curé of St-Victor
#-the signature of Michel matches that on the Prou marriage record#-this couple appear as well at Saint-Victor, and the godfathers of two of their children were the husbands of Michel’s sisters Anne and Louise.
At least six children were born to Michel and Catherine before 1640. None of the children found are likely candidates to be the daughter Marie (fille du roi) who was about 10 years younger. Catherine Surger was buried at Saint-Victor in September 1647.
At the end of August 1648 banns were delivered to Saint-Laurent parish for Michel Grandin (widower) and Jeanne Tavernier. A year later on 5 September 1649 the couple were parents to a daughter Marie. The family has not been found in the records after that date, but Michel was noted in 1655 at the marriage of his niece Louise Prou.

===Establishing his correct identity===To begin with it is known that he was the father of Marie Grandin, named by her on her marriage contract with Jean Baudet in 1670, cited as already deceased.:(Contrat de) Mariage entre Jean Boudet (Beaudet), habitant de Champigny, fils de Bastien (Sébastien) Boudet (Beaudet) et de Marie Baudouin (Baudonier), ses père et mère du bourg de Blaichais (Blanzay) en l'évêché de Poitiers, et Marie Gaudin (Grandin), fille du feu Michel Gaudin (Grandin) et de Marie LeJeune, ses père et mère de la ville et évêché d'Orléans, sont présent dame Anne Gasnier (Gagné - Gagnier), veuve du feu sieur Jean Bourdon, de son vivant écuyer et seigneur de Saint-Jean et de Saint-François, conseiller au Conseil souverain, demoiselle Élizabeth Étienne, Hélène DesPortes, Agnès Morin, Madeleine Normand et Jean-Baptiste de Poitier (DePoitier), écuyer, sieur du Buisson (DuBuisson), amis des futurs époux, Jean-Baptiste Gosset et Gilles Dutartre, sont témoins 7 septembre 1670 [Document insinuoctobre 1670][http://pistard.banq.qc.ca/unite_chercheurs/description_fonds?p_anqsid=201903211755184011&p_centre=03Q&p_classe=CR&p_fonds=301&p_numunide=929558 BANQ insinuation de contrat de mariage 1670]
Secondly, he is cited as present at the marriage of his niece in St-Victor parish of Orléans in 1655 (image on profile) which reveals he was the brother of Louise Grandin. In fact his signature is found on the original record as proof of his participation.Archives départementales du Loiret en ligne. Registres paroissiaux et d’état civil; Orléans paroisse Saint-Victor M 1651-1658, cote 3 NUM 234/1977 image 39.
Yet a third marriage record, this one for another niece, a daughter of Anne Grandin, notes the presence of the bride’s uncles Michel Grandin, and Nicolas Prou (the husband of Louise Grandin) confirming that the three Grandin were siblings.Archives départementales du Loiret en ligne. Registres paroissiaux et d’état civil; Orléans paroisse Saint-Euverte MS 1630-1667, cote 3 NUM 234/371 image 62.
Finally it is the marriage record of Anne Grandin,Archives départementales du Loiret en ligne. Registres paroissiaux et d’état civil; Orléans paroisse Saint-Victor BMS 1612-1625, cote 3 NUM 234/1971 image 193. which names her mother Geophrine Barbier as being present that establishes the parentage of the three Grandin siblings. There is a baptismal record for Louise Grandin daughter of Michel Grandin and Geophrine Barbier, as well as two younger siblings of these same parents. An older brother was married in 1612, which again named the same parents who were present for his marriage. (See profile of [[Grandin-119|Michel Grandin]].)

In view of the recent online blog of Gilles Brassard whose independent research and conclusions parallel that previously undertaken for Michel and the Grandin family, it seemed permissable to expand on the marriages and children of Michel Grandin, father of the immigrant Marie Grandin.
While it is tempting to suppose that the daughter Marie baptized 5 September 1649 was the fille du roi in New France, the name she gave at the time of her marriage for her mother was Marie Lesene or as generally perceived, Lejeune. The name was not Jeanne Tavernier which begs some explanation. Gilles Brassard’s blog ends with the same sentiment
