She was the daughter of [[Gareman-18|Pierre Gareman]] and [[Charlot-2|Madeleine Charlot]]. Godparents at the infant's baptism were [[D'Abancourt-4|Adrien D'Abancourt dit Lacaille]] and [[Langlois-51|Marguerite Langlois]], wife of [[Martin-2179|Abraham L'Écossais]]. The officiating priest was Ambroise Devost, a Jesuit.[https://www.genealogiequebec.com/Membership/LAFRANCE/acte/57142 Baptism of Marguerite Gareman 1639] Collection Drouin, IGD (Membership)Baptism "Canada, Québec, registres paroissiaux catholiques, 1621-1979," FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-8993-F936-X?cc=1321742&wc=HCT2-829%3A17585101%2C19508101%2C19508102), Québec > Notre-Dame-de-Québec > image 31 of 512; Archives Nationales du Quebec (National Archives of Quebec), Montreal.

Pierre was engaged to work at Portneuf, but the Iroquois threat there drove them to take refuge at the Jesuit mission at Sillery, where daughter [[Gareman-4|Marguerite]] was born and baptized in 1639. By 1643, the family was at Trois-RiviPortneuf, the family settled at Cap-Rouge (now part of Quebec city).http://habitantsandvoyageurs.blogspot.ca/2011/03/tues-par-les-iroquois-part-2.html
