8. | Sr. Josiah Davisson was born on 01 Dec 1744 in Augusta Co., Rockingham Co., VA (son of DAVISSON Daniel and HARRISON Phoebe); died on 09 Sep 1825 in Monroe, Preble Co., OH. Notes:
On May 7, 1778, Josiah was named the Sheriff of Rockingham County, and the first jail was erected - but never completed - at a plantation known as Smithland, just north of the City of Harrisonburg. Davisson’s term was brief, because of his inability to collect taxes. His replacement, Abraham Smith, had been a member of the Virginia militia during the French-Indian wars. At one time, he was captured and tried for treason. Another sheriff not only was required to locate and arrest an individual, but following the trial, he was ordered to hang the man, a task he performed from a tree in Harrisonburg.
