Pigeon Lake is a small community located approximately forty miles southwest of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, with a population of 150 people who are members of the Cree Tribe.

About six years ago Cecil Nepoose realized the importance of keeping our culture alive, decided to form a Native singing group. With the help of his brother Andy, cousins Albert and Gerald Rowan and his late father, he started on a small scale. Interest spread to other people and the group now known as the Pigeon Lake Singers was created..

The Traditional Opening Song is sung by Crees before they start a pow-wow celebration.

The Chiefs and Council Song is a give away song and is sung for people who are being honored. The Pigeon Lake Singers wish to dedicate this song to the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, His Excellency, Ralph Stienhauer, who is a Cree Indian.

The Memorial Song was adopted by the group in the fall of 1975 when it was sung in memory of Mrs. Martha Deschamps. This song is now used as a Memorial Song by the group.

Wherever you go you will hear the voice of Cecil Nepoose who is the lead singer and drummer for the group. He is now one of the top singers in Alberta.

Francis Greene is a renowned top singer who started as a young boy. He has made several recordings (including Songs from the Battleford Pow-Wow Canyon Record No. 6142) and is a familiar face in the pow-wow circuit.

Albert Rowan who helped start this group has worked his way up and is considered one of the best singers.

Glen Nepoose and Mac Blood are new singers who devote much of their time and effort to the group and are an asset.

Florence Deschamps is also not new in the pow-wow country. As a singer and dancer she contributes her share in the husband's interest.

Notes by Florence Deschamps; Secretary, Pigeon Lake Pow-wow Troupe.
